Gavin Whyte

Let's say Cardiff wanted to pay £1.5m and we wanted £4m. Both clubs agree on £2.5m but no one wants to lose face so the final figure is undisclosed and both clubs go away fairly happy.
I don’t think they want us to know!

This is the reality of where we are.

100k to 2 mil with hopefully some add ons. In a year.

That’s exactly the kind of business we need to be doing every season.

It’s a bit depressing when it happens, but hopefully it gives us a bit to reinvest and highlights the club as a viable option for talented players to use as a shop window.
I am canterburyexile but tho I am not unhappy with the sentiments I most certainly did not post it. A mystery

I've heard £2.5m plus add ons. Very very unofficial mind as I'd also heard that the sell on was 20% rather than the 10% now suggested.

Think that's too low, should have stuck to the £4m, maybe £3.5m with add ons, £2.5 too low, considering some are saying £1.5/2m With addons surprised the club would accept an offer so low considering we were apparently waiting for £4m, should have stuck to our guns and if Cardiff didn't want to meet our price sell in January/next summer for more

I see all your points, but when Kemar Roofe had the chance to leave in January, he turned it down, as he wanted to repay the faith we'd shown in him and help us through the rest of the season, he then got an even better move, and I didn't have a problem with that at all, I was grateful for all he'd done for us, and the loyalty he'd shown, and wished him well for the rest of his career.

I just feel that Whyte could've treated us better, after all we've done for him, as he still would've got a big money move at the end of the season anyway, and probably to a much bigger club than Cardiff.

Sorry if people think I'm wrong, but thats just the way I feel, maybe I'm just feeling bitter about the whole thing, but after such a disastrous summer transfer window, who can blame me?

I just hope we manage to now plug the gaping holes all over our squad with some decent quality players, and we still manage to salvage a half decent season

I hear you and gotta say it was a bit of a punch to see him in a Cardiff shirt. But I'd argue that "all we have done for him" is also "all he has done for us".

It was his performances which have created this opportunity, we merely invested 100k to get him in and play him, the rest is up to what he does on the pitch and he did that in some style. You could also argue that NI picking and playing him pushed his value/marketed him more. Nature of the game. Roofe was probably the exception to the rule.

It COULD have been more, it could have been later...but it's not. Just have to move on, and hope that this dog turd of a transfer window will now get rolled in glitter for a sparkly finish.

Really can't get the people who are overly upset at Whyte leaving. Yes it is a little bit annoying, but the annoyance is really stemming from the fact that we're struggling to get people in. I always thought this window it would have been remarkable to keep hold of Eastwood, Dickie, Brannagan and Whyte, but knew it would be unlikely a summer window would go by without losing one of our assets. The way our model works is partly down to agreeing that players can use this club as a stepping stone. We've seen it with so many players for a number of years with the likes of Roofe, Lundstram, Ledson, Rothwell and Johnson, so why can't some fans get used to this by now?

fair point

Hmm. Neither of us know, but I suspect Roofe turned down a January move (can’t remember it tbh) because he a) thought we were going up, and that b) he thought a promotion would get him a bigger move. And he was right on both counts. Whyte, on the other hand, is playing for a club that now has little apparent ambition other than to scramble through the next payday. It’s a shame to see him, but who can blame him?

If true we’ve been roped off
Even if its £2m we have been done. Didn't the club put a sale value on him of £4m (which I think is realistic) just a week ago?

We could have kept him for another season (I'm sure he wouldn't have thrown his toys out the pram) and have had the benefit of him in the team, and he would still have gone for £2m+ next summer, when even more clubs would have noticed his talent.

Short term in for a quick buck, if we’d have kept him for another year then easily 5-6 million

Yep but as teams get smarter we will continue to have a turn over of players like this.

As long as the recruitment team keep flagging them up and we have a manager who believes in it it’s the only decent income we have until things change.

Player trading will always happen for a club our size, we just have to be smart and extract top money.

He will move for bigger money in a year or two, I hope we have a hefty sell on

I was really looking forward to seeing more of Whtye this season but actually this is not all bad news putting aside the monies the club will receive. Gavin was never going to be available for all the games. For his age I believe KR would have been reticent to play him every game and he also would have been away for international duty. Both those occurrences will not phase a team like Cardiff but would have had much more detrimental affect on us at OUFC. Has to be said good business for a lower league club like us.

BBC Oxford reporting £2.5m upfront rising to £3m. I imagine the majority will be used to pay off Eales' debt, but I hope a small proportion is used to get our deals over the line, you know what agents are like these days!

I agree.

maybe after my initial tantrum, I should've allowed myself to calm down first, before piping up on here!

I suppose really, like you say, Roofe had more reason to stay than Whyte, so yeah, with the mess we're in, who can blame him really?

It still bloody hurts though!! ?

I think it would have been accepted more if we had addressed the other priority positions (dare I mention them!).

Agreed. In the past losing players has felt like a little stumble whilst walking up a hill, whereas this one feels like a trip when walking down a descent.
