Should be used like tennis.... let the Captain have 3 "shots" to use VAR.
It's a good idea, but I can't see how it would work in practice.
What about if there's a challenge in the box which results in the ball ending up in the keeper's hands (I.e. it doesn't go out of play), the attacking team thinks it was a foul but the defending team are keen to play on and quickly start a counter attack.
When does the aggrieved team get to submit a challenge? Do they have to wait until the ball goes out of play? If so, what happens if the opposition goes up the other end and scores? Is their goal then disallowed if it is subsequently judged that it should have been a penalty?
OR, is play stopped as soon as the team submits a challenge? If so, what's to stop teams from doing so when their opposition is breaking quickly, even if they don't actually think they were fouled?
To me, challenges just won't work because there's not the same natural stoppages in play like there is in most other sports.
I think VAR has been a farce in this tournament. The referees don't seem to really understand when they're supposed to be using it, let alone pundits and fans. And even when it is used, there's been occasions where dubious decisions have been made. I'm still not convinced France should have had a penalty, for example.
I think that, whilst it's a good idea, football fans/players/owners/mangers are all going to have to accept that even with VAR, not every decision is going to be right (especially when you consider the fact that a lot of decisions are a matter of opinion. Two people can look at the same slo-mo replay and come to completely different conclusions).
Instead, I think the powers that be should focus their energy (and funds) on improving the standard of refereeing at all levels of the game.
