General Oxford United Squad 2023/24

Should find away to keep Browne and Edwards, when fit they’d be real assets to the sqaud. Murphys already shown that.
We have cover with Dale, Goodrham, Leigh and Harris if needed.
Manning has had problems at city, with the likes of Atkinson etc breaking down on returns. Maybe repeating his eagerness to get both Browne and Edwards back to early.

It would certainly be very brave of us to have Murphy, Browne and Edwards all here next season.

I am actually starting to think it might happen though, partly because our fans are so used to signing cripples that they appear to have developed Stockholm syndrome so will accept it and partly because if we carry on signing players only till 2026 (which I can’t see changing with the way things are going) we are a bit limited in who we sign.

Why do people think it would be brave to keep Murphy? He has shown since Des came in how good he can be, he has also been open with saying he had his priority’s wrong before having a child.
I don’t see any reason why we wouldn’t offer Murphy a new deal.

Fair play to Murphy, he's definitely put a shift in since Buckingham's arrival.
Still a gamble to offer him a new contract, taking the first 18 months of his contract into account.
If we sign Murphy there's no way we can sign Browne and Edwards.
We need to move away from the Robinson era of offering expensive contracts to injury prone and aging players.
We need robust and athletic players that are are going to be fit to play the majority of games over a long hard season.

No. Brave to have Edwards, Browne and Murphy. All three are likely (on past evidence) to be missing for extended periods. If our way of playing is to get it to the wingers, then relying on unreliable players to fill those slots is just a bit daft.

Let's call it McGuane syndrome.

I've had enough of quarter or half a season wonders. No telling which way Murphy would go, but to dismiss it as no risk is slightly insane.

Every contract offer comes with risk. However, Murphy has been good or better for a year now having been one of our better players under Manning at the end of last season, and arguably our best player consistently under Buckingham.

He has started 17 of our 49 League One games in that year.

Or 23 of the 87 League One games over the term of his contract, thus far.

That is the risk.

What?

10 games to go when Manning joined.

First 5 games he started 3 times and came on for nominal minutes in the other two. Of those 3 starts, a dot ball (I.e. a non event), a decent game but missed a pen to win and hooked at half time in the last for a dismal performance. From which point he was reduced pretty much to the bench (4 times out of 5) and in only one did he produce anything remotely decent - as an enforced substitute due to an injury to Goodrham. His only start after that was against the whipping boys of the division. So I’d argue in Manning’s 10 run-in he gave us one performance remotely close to the level now seeing, the rest he was completely ineffective or not used.

Despite that fantastic run, Manning then fought every possible reason to play him this season, featuring once, in the cup, in our opening 8 games, before finally getting a start at left back in a throwaway competition. After that it was more bench appearances, very often not coming on.

You could’ve just stopped at saying he’s been one of our best players under Buckingham. That’s true. But much like the debate with ciaron brown getting player of the season last year, context is everything. Manning clearly thought very little of him or didn’t trust him, hence reducing him to the bench mostly, and on a number of occasions would rather not use his 5th sub than bring him on regardless of whether we were comfortably ahead or chasing a goal.

All people are saying is that he’s a risk and quite rightly cautious about him staying given not only his personal record but ours as a club with players of this ilk. It doesn’t need ramming down their throats that he’s playing well, we can see that, but it doesn’t mean he is or has been a good investment for the club.

For someone who pretty much posts every day about how great Liam Manning was I think you can excuse one post that recognises that Murphy is one of our better players without sulking about it!

Liam Manning was great. Once again letting your heart rule your head.

He took over when we was in free fall under a manager you backed to the very end, kept us up, partly re-built and left us in 2nd place, one point off top.

Murphy has been very good in 2024. That’s all. Don’t try and re-write history by suggesting anything else.

Findlay will be very unlikely to leave on a permanent deal. You'll struggle to find anyone north of the border who are a) interested and b) willing to meet his salary that Karl kindly gave him. I fear it will be another season long loan for Findlay with OUFC paying some of the wage.

Let them have him and work a deal for
Lewis Mayo

I don't know the answer to this, but I'm sure someone does.

Has Browne ever had a longer injury free run of games for us, than Murphy is currently having?

Just basing on performances when both have been fit and playing, Murphy's performances over the last 3 months have been better and more consistent than Browne's have been at any of his time with us.

Edward's is difficult to judge as he's played about 3 games worth of football for us!

Two more seasons of loaning him out but paying a big chunk of his wages, absolutely terrible signing.

...and then probably another season-long loan in 2025-2026 as well.
Great job, Karl...absolutely smashing!
