New Stadium Plans - The Triangle - Planning

If the plan is to be a top 30 club, is 16k enough long term though?

I wouldn't necessarily say we're a 'sleeping giant', but we're in a location where there aren't many, if any, 'big' clubs within a close proximity. If we get to a decent level (ie, the Championship), you may see a fair new match-goers, especially when the 'bigger' clubs come to town. Play decent football in those games and who knows, maybe a number of those become regulars, or bring their friends/family along to the next game.

If we stay in L1 16k is more than enough, we won't even get close to filling it most weeks. But if we progress under the right circumstances I think there's certainly potential for the fanbase, or at least match-going base, to increase considerably.

Just looking at it, there's only 1 stadium in the Championship this season that has an average attendance of below 16,000 so far (Rotherham).
Bournemouth's average attendances:

Is Oxford a lot cheaper than Brentford?

The stadium has more seats but the land itself is smaller. They also started the ground before inflation sent everything crazy.
Maybe not a lot cheaper but I'd imagine somewhat?

It cost Brentford £71million. Using the Bank of England's 'inflation calculator' that would be £90million in 'todays money' (using a comparison from 2017 when they started construction).

A few other people have made good points about why it may be more but it still seems like a huge cost.

It's worth noting Brentford's stadium is just a stadium without a hotel being part of it. I also believe their construction was just for the stadium, add in the ancillary developments they did separately and it won't be far off I'd imagine.

It is a huge cost, just shows how expensive Oxford has become.

Please don’t accuse me of that. No, I’m not. Just a long-term fan who has been supporting the club when we nearly folded with much lower debts in the past, so genuinely worried about the future if we suddenly have minus £150M on our balance sheet and can’t get out of Lge1.

My suggestion of buying and tarting up the Ka$$tad was a desperate one. But it would have been a credible Plan B had we built better relations with Mr K. I could’ve said let’s ground share with Ox City and spend money relaying their pitch until we find somewhere affordable to buy.

I want a stadium we can call our own and which is sustainable and affordable as much as the next person. A bigger venue at Stratfield Brake might have been worth the money they’ve suggested, but a 16k seater at the triangle with all the hassle around that, building bridges, well-being centres etc is what is bumping up the price.

You can look at the proposals in any way you like but being saddled with up to £150M debt for a 16k seater stadium is not good value for money. If we’re told that separate entities not tied to the club will own the hotel, maintain the access roads and non-football stuff, and the club debt is only £50M for the stadium, offices, training facilities etc then it’s worth it.
Sorry, but anybody who has been a supporter throughout the Kassam era knows what a difficult guy he is to deal with.
I believe that a number of owners have tried buying off Kassam. Even if we could buy the stadium ( which we can't), there are huge problems.
The overflow car park will be built on there will be disputes over who can use the parts of the land Kassam.owns.
There is allegedly problems with the foundations. There was some work suggesting that just getting the Kassam up to scratch would cost £10m's.
Plus Kassam won't sell.

But we aren't buying the land, so the cost/value of it means little. I thought the £100m estimate was over the top and even before we get planning it has spiralled to £130m or more. I am a bit worried that my solid gold seat isn't going to be comfortable...

Your seat will be very comfortable if we get through planning

Dear Malcxxx xxxxxx,
Thank you for your email making the following comments on application number 24/00539/F

I fully support the building of a new stadium for the team. It can only be good for Kidlington and the county, in so many ways.
Please approve the club's plans.
Thank you"

Having just skimmed through the supportive comments on the planning application, nobody has yet mentioned the the fact that OUFC will be paying for the Stratfiels Brake sports pitches to be upgraded. I will certainly mention it when I get round to my submission this weekend.
I touched on it in my submission...

"The Oxfordshire community will be strengthened with the provision of updated sporting facilities, not only in The Triangle but also with Oxford United proving to be a true friend to Stratfield Brake with much-needed investment to the crumbling facilities there, taking the burden away from local tax payers."

Hi as you can see I am a new member, but have supported Oxford United for more years than I can remember. I live in Begbroke and previously in Kidlington. I am 100% behind the move to the triangle and listened to the fans forum up until the link went down. I would like to thank all involved in putting this fan’s forum together as it provided some real information about our future. I have sent my support for the stadium to Cherwell Planning and after last nights ff I see no reason for Cherwell to turn this application down. I am a life member of Oxvox and have a close relationship with the club. I will take part in the debates on here and will try to be objective and not obtrusive at all times. Now I need to catch up on some of the recent posts.

Welcome Dillon, good to have you on the board. We are a decent bunch, but as you'll soon find out easily distracted on threads...

True, but I was hoping for a 'hub' where there was substantial capacity for fans to eat, drink etc up till kick off. Unless the concourses are going to open a lot earlier and have substantial seating, people won't want to be in there for any significant amount of time.

One small sports bar just seems a bit... meh!

Not caught up with the rest of the thread yet so I don't know if it's already been mentioned, but I imagine that the offerings outside of the stadium will be from businesses who pay a rent/pitch fee.
The club will probably try to entice fans inside the stadium with food and drink offers in the concourses, such as bogof pints until x amount of time before kickoff, the club will more than likely be working off a percentage of these sales and it will mean more revenue.
I agree that the sports bar could be a bit bigger, but it could also be that they'll erect a couple of Marquees outside the bar on match days and it will be like the Priory was and the capacity will triple. Until it's built we won't know, can't wait to find out though.

Thank you Steve. My comment on the application was purely financial based, explaining how important the application was to the community and the taxpayers of Cherwell and Oxfordshire County Council. I have yet to see or read any valid reasons why this application would be rejected. Over the decades Oxford United have given so much to the County’s residents in so many ways and we would be lost without them.

It wasn't before but I think someone on here said pop up bars outside the stadium was mentioned last night.

Now I'm just hoping they put some heaters out... most of the football season is f*****g freezing!

I understand you x-ing out your surname but I particularly like your caution on x-ing out the letters after Malc. They'll never guess your first name now.

Of course, if you're first name is actually Malcyof, then I look stupid.
