Ex-Staff Liam Manning

Hasn't done Girona any harm either.
I suppose the difference is we’re not actually a part of the MCG and so not benefiting financially from them (thank heavens!) We’re just snapping up young coaches that have worked within it and been indoctrinated into their ideals, and just assuming it’ll work anywhere, anyhow.

You’re telling me that if you were offered the opportunity of replacing Des Buckingham with Liam Manning right now, you wouldn’t take it ? I’d snap Mannings hand off in that scenario. We’d have an identity again and a manager who knows how to win in L1 - two things we just don’t have under Des Buckingham.
No way! He dumped us, even for a good financial reason. I don’t want him back I’m happy to carry on with Des.

In other words, stay in L1.

Fair enough.
Not sure some of the players are good enough to play in the championship. I remember when we went into the old division one, it was heartbreaking when we came back down after a couple of years. We were an excellent team then but didn’t have the standard to remain in the division for too long. To me we would need to go up automatically to be good enough to stay in the championship. So perhaps we need to remain in this division for this year and get players during the summer to make a real effort next year for promotion. Des will then have a preseason and experience of division one to work on. I’m being hopeful I know but think it makes sense.

True enough.

On that specific thought, we have Des who has gone from having the network of support and resources that come with being a part of MCG to something very very different at this moment in time.

However, if he has learned anything from his time with them (and I certainly believe he has no fool) then perhaps the whole process of relocating back to the UK, making the adjustment to League one whilst dealing with this vacuum of a hierarchy at OUFC, is just making matters that much more challenging than anticipated at this moment in time.

Browne would probably warrant his wage if he stayed fit
Yeah and I’d be worth £10k a week if I scored 5 goals every game, but I don’t.

Henry has been a great servant to the club
We can’t spend our playing budget on long service awards.

Murphy + Bodin are both good players for this level.
If you base it on something other than their overall contribution, I think they’re both exceptional value for money.

Seddon + Findlay are out on loan so we're unlikely to be paying all their wages (unless we've negotiated an awful deal)
We are almost certainly paying some of their wages for them to play for someone else, which doesn’t seem the best deal.

and they'll both likely be sold in the summer
To who?

as I imagine will Browne
To who?
and Henry (Henry probably released, though).
it’d be superb business to sell an out of contract player, even Kip would agree.

Is it really that much of a 'train wreck'?
It was described as the rubble from the train wreck. The train wreck was the terrible year of form under KR.

We had a decent core
For a couple of years I have wondered if we have a core that thinks it’s better than it is

and Manning built ontop of that a good squad
He did
with Des adding to it
I haven't seen many people argue that Des improved things so far

I'm not sure how you can say we're 'in the rubble'?
and indeed he didn’t!

One year on £750k, get a substantial payout when you're sacked. Spend the rest of your career getting lower end Championship or L1 jobs paying you a couple hundred thousand a year.

Manning's taken a leaf out of Appleton's book!

Eventually the gravy train comes to a stop though.

Appleton was waiting 9 months to land the Charlton gig......and he may have to wait even longer for the next one as he now has far more failures than successes on his CV.

And he at least achieved something with us (and had one good season with Lincoln). Manning doesn't even have that to fall back on.

Nah, if he doesn't pull Bristol City out of this tailspin (and relegation is not out of the question, the way they're playing - 12th to 23rd are separated by only six points, and any of them could still be joining us in League One next season) and he gets fired, he will rue his decision to leave us, even whilst he's counting his payout. Eventually you'll stop getting gigs if you have multiple failures and zero honours.

I've never had an issue with people looking out for theirs and their families future, and Manning is undoubtedly earning more at Bristol City than he was with us.

However there are gambles with all of these decisions, and if he is sacked in the next few weeks he might struggle to get another job any time soon. £750k (or whatever he is on) may sound lovely at the time, but it's not so great if he fails to pick up a decent job again. Being sacked twice and walking out on a job as he did doesn't look great on a CV that is not even 3 years old yet.

Even the forum's Holy Trinity of Scotch Egg, Steve Gilbert and Foley wouldn't suggest that... And that's going sum...
