Away Match Day Thread 18/9/21 L1: Cheltenham Town v OUFC

And Muzza played for Derby, remember?

Herbie needs to ride again in my book, overhyped
The only person who hyped up Kane was our manager.

I suspect you’ll be eating a very large helping of humble pie, in regards to Herbie.

Fingers crossed Erik and Co are willing to plough more money into us in Jan as for the love of god, we will require a CF not in the mould of Taylor and Winnall and we will require a CM who has the ability to impose himself.
Should we really be in a position where we’re saying we need even more money putting in and even more players signing in January? Look at the amount of players there are on the books:

LW: Holland, Bodin, Cooper
RW: Whyte, Williams, Sykes
CF: Taylor, Winnall, Agyei

That is three completely different front lines, and none of them are cheap fodder. Nearly all of them are on very decent wages (some are on actively very large ones), and the ones you might say could be slightly cheaper in Sykes and Cooper, given they were both signed from part-time football and therefore won’t be on mega bucks, both cost six figure fees.

Then you’ve got Henry, Brannagan, McGuane, Kane, Gorrin, Hanson and Chambers-Parillon for the midfield three, plus Forde if you want to include him in his actual position. Brannagan, McGuane and Henry are three of the club’s best earners, Hanson is also on really good money, and Kane will be having a very good chunk of his not insignificant wages covered for Barnsley to let him go after paying over a million quid for him. That’s around 17 players vying for six positions on paper, the vast majority of whom cost a lot of money on fees and/or salaries. To turn around at this point and go, “I’m gonna need another couple I’m afraid” would be pretty ballsy to say the least.

The money and the time to build has been very much put in - they’ve even allowed the club to keep hold of players like Stevens and Brannagan rather than cashing in. At what point does somebody go, “Karl, you’ve had virtually everything you’ve asked for, you’ve pretty much got three sets of forward lines and three sets of midfielders, you need to make this work”? I also don’t know how anybody could look at those players and this squad on paper, consider the money spent on it and believe that we are plucky mid-table underdogs punching above our weight. We spend money at this level. We spend good money.

If he needs to do two out, two in or something similar to improve the quality then fine, but he’s got a squad of about 25 players (not bad considering so many people claim you can’t have two players for each position, and that decent players won’t come if they think they won’t be guaranteed starters), and they’re all ones he signed or chose to keep. He could never, ever claim he has not been backed. And that’s without mentioning how many new contracts and pay rises he’s had.

I think he needs to make it work now - the bigger boys won’t be as in awe of him as Tiger. I think he knows that, too, which is a positive. He needs to make it work.

I’m sure we’ll have two out two in at Christmas. BTW I still haven’t seen anything definite about the squad size, do we have an official squad? Is anyone left out?

It may sound harsh but, I think this season is the last chance saloon for Robinson. He's had more than enough time to get things how he wants the set up to be, now the results are overdue. Yes, we have been in the play offs twice but is that good enough? Championship football is what the money men want, that's what would justify a new stadium with bells and whistles.

I resisted the temptation to post last night after getting back for fear of not being constructive. Having slept on it, i feel no less annoyed and frankly dumbfounded about yesterday’s performance.

First and foremost, who are these Oxford supporters that have this self righteous attitude towards teams like Cheltenham, AFC and Wycombe? What in gods name gives us a divine right to beat any one of them? Is it because we play 4 square passes across our backline before the inevitable, hopeful ball up to Taylor’s head/shoulders/ chest (which he never wins btw!)? Newsflash: Square passes do not make you a good footballing team nor do they make you an effective one!

I said it after last week and i’ll say it again, KR has not addressed the midfield physical ability issues he spoke about after Blackpool. We are powder puff at best and downright soft at worst.

Maybe at 33 i’m old fashioned (surely not!) but i do not care for a pretty footballing team and the comments i heard in the away end yesterday and the derogatory way in which people spoke of Cheltenham was bizarre. They deserved to beat us with their style. Just like AFC deserved to beat us and just like Wycombe were worthy of a point last week. It is not up to these teams to bow to our ‘superior’ footballing philosophy, it is up to KR and Co to find a way to break these teams down and find a way to win. right now, playing a bloke who’s 5’10” up top, on his own, with a right footed winger playing from the left and no focal point to our attack i just cannot see how the tide will change against these teams.

KR is inflexible and downright stubborn in his approach, or so it would seem. Unless he has a willingness to accept a change of system is required against the more direct oppositions, a mid-table (at best) season awaits.

Fingers crossed Erik and Co are willing to plough more money into us in Jan as for the love of god, we will require a CF not in the mould of Taylor and Winnall and we will require a CM who has the ability to impose himself. Stay in touch until then, get those players in and you just never know.

Final point, travelling numbers were again outstanding - more variety of song and prolonged spells of singing required. That said, the fare on the pitch could really help with that!
I am really glad that someone has had the balls to comment on our current style of play. I, for one, am really fed up with all the ‘tippy tippy’ stuff. It IS ineffective if you are not good enough to make proper use of it and in league one, it’s a style of football that borders on arrogance. We are not Man City !!!

All teams squads are listed on the EFL website we have a full squad of 22 which includes Mousinho, Hanson and Cooper so no opportunity to bring in an ooc player.

I think the passing around the back style seems to be used at the beginning of the season till we realise it’s ineffective then we get the ball forward quicker once Robinson is under a bit of pressure for results, so maybe we should just skip the bit where we think we are Xavi/Iniesta era Barcelona and go straight to the bit where we are an effective league one club?

The safety Robinson has here has its plus sides but it also lets him get away with a lot that other managers in this division wouldn’t.

it was a tongue in cheek to suggest KR should be Zooming Erik and asking for more resources.

Having said that, due to the imbalance of the squad right now, the complete oversight to not sign midfielders who impose themselves on robust opposition and a a strikeforce that isn’t effective in KR’s preferred style; it will either take a player or two out to accommodate more suitable replacements….or KR will have to get the begging bowl out to Erik and Pals if promotion is the ambition of all concerned.

Only if they have no character
At the end of the first half of the the season ie Jam and they aren’t performing then maybe people will bi even KR might as he know his job would be in question m. Am I happy with the last 3 games off course not but these things happen, if they continue the players will be well aware that they’re performing under par.

I actually like tippy tappy! ;)

But it has to be done a) by players comfortable with it b) at reasonable speed and c) for a real purpose. I *know* the theory is to move the ball about to make space, but if you do it slowly it is ineffective (b) and if you aren't really suited to it you are likely to lose it in a dangerous area (a) otherwise you end up doing it for its own sake (c).

The problem is, if we abandon it then do we have the personnel to do anything else any more effectively?

Look, I think Scotchers is as deluded and over-positive as the next man, but we absolutely did have a ‘good’ first half against Cheltenham. We drew it 0-0 away from home, didn’t concede a shot on target, had multiple shots ourselves including a couple which forced the keeper to pull off great saves, and forced multiple corners. It wasn’t a great half, because we didn’t score, but it was a good one. I watched the game and we dominated the first half and looked by far the better team - they were on the ropes at times.

Sadly, the second half was absolutely atrocious.

We had more ball than Cheltenham in the first half. We won the ball in their half on a few occasions and we played some neat football in our own half, when not under pressure.

Not withstanding Henry’s speculative efforts from range, how many times did we test their GK in that ‘good’ first half?

if safe possession and a bit of territory represent a good half, then we had it.

If testing the oppositions GK and stretching their backline represents a good half, then we didn’t have anything more than an a satisfactory half.

When all said and done, football is played over 90 minutes and overall, we were found wanting and deserved to get beaten by Cheltenham. There is quite simply, no dressing it up. We got what we deserved.

This is how I'd look to set up. Horrendously unfair on Skyes, who has been outstanding, and I wouldn't be against dropping Whyte altogether to keep him in. But I think it keeps our best players in their best positions.

Everyone: “We need more physicality in midfield”

Scotchers: “Drop our only physical midfielder”

First time at the match this season.

I was in the Colin Farmer at the top middle. The adjacent steward had no front teeth and an IQ close to the age of the average Love Island contestant but there we are.

We dominated the first half, possession wise, and generated about 1 chance, a shot from 30 yards from Henry. Lovely neat passing and not much threatening movement apart from Taylor. When they got it forward our central defenders scrambled it away while the midfield were elsewhere pressing. To me it looked as if we might somehow get a goal but we weren't looking very likely to. They looked like they would. I mentioned to my agent that we might struggle to keep the pace up after the break.

And so it was. @ECYellow has mentioned that Seddon is good going forward - he was (with his fellows) unimpressive at defending. The back 4 really don't seem to talk and, with Whyte anonymous, Kane dying slowly Cheltenham did score: a quick attack. It was coming, it came.

Then they ground us out, like a herbal smoke. How was it that the big number 9 didn't lose a ball in the air, won second ball all the time and toyed with us?

The only guts and imagination shown by our lads was when Sykes walked back ALONE to applaud the supporters. Good on him.

A poor afternoon was not improved, when having realised @Paul B was enjoying an adjacent piss before leaving (he being someone I've done the walking football thing with, and would have liked to greet) some tall cunt leaned cordially into me and belched in my face.

Sums it up.

I like tippy tappy pretty football and have greatly enjoyed a lot of our play in the last few years. I’m patient if they knock it about for a while until they find a space, but to work well it has to be done quickly and with almost telepathic understanding of where colleagues are or are going to be. Maybe this is why we have bad starts, because it takes time to build up that understanding

That’s the problem it happens to much and we have been nearly caught doing that, but we’re not alone a lot of clubs do that. It annoys me when we could have a quick break and the full backs hang around the edge of the area the keeper holds on to long and then the opposition reposition and face up and any surprise onslaught/attack is over.

Isn't footy a wonderful diversion on a Saturday afternoon?
We allowed the satnav some leeway with "time saving" diversions and ended up going home via the White Hart roundabout in Swindon. So upset, we actually considered going for a pee in Sainsburys. Gave it a miss on the grounds of hygiene.
