Ex Player Ex-Player Thread

Following on from the player watching of our ex-Yellows, affter the DE takeover and subsequent seasons under the model of ‘buy cheap talent, make it better, sell for more, we’ve sold the following players for the approximate sums (others departed such as Chey Dunkley and Curtis Nelson who went up a division but on frees. Canice Carroll, Cameron Norman, Kane Hemmings and Liam Sercombe all left for free, but I’m looking at the notable £500k+ sales).
  • Kemar Roofe to Leeds United for £3m
  • Callum O’Dowda to Bristol City for £1m (+add ons)
  • John Lundstram to Sheffield United for £700k
  • Marvin Johnson to Middlesbrough for £2.5m
  • Ryan Ledson to Preston North End for £500k (best estimate)
  • Joe Rothwell to Blackburn Rovers for £150k (best estimate)
  • Gavin Whyte to Cardiff City for £2m
  • Shandon Baptiste to Brentford £2.25m
  • Tariq Fosu to Brentford for £750k
Whilst we all chuntered that Baptiste was worth more and the like, with talk of our of our former players recently it does make me wonder how many of those would be commanding the same fee now? Is anyone going to bid £2m to buy Gavin Whyte in 2020 or stump up £2.5m for Johnson? Ledson and O’Dowda haven’t kicked on as well as they should have either. It makes you think that we 1. Made good business at the right time 2. Did a far better job of developing players than the club they went on to.

Not all fall in that category though. Roofe is having a successful if a bit weird career in Belgium, Lunny has taken to PL life rather well and Rothwell appears for Blackburn regularly.

It does look like the Lunny and Rothwell fees are the ones we should have been fuming about. (Hindsight ey?!)

That’s the trouble when it gets down to the last year of their contracts players like Lundstam, Ledson, Nelson should of gone for the million+ & that’s likely to happen again with Dickie & Brannagan this summer.

As for Rothwell & Dunkley I didn’t see them as big money losses for us as both were good players but didn’t look like they had that wow championship quality about them at the time for us but saying their agents got them great deals after leaving us.

This one really stings. That said, I remember at the time being disappointed he was leaving but unsure that he would flourish in the Championship, didn't think he had the physicality, so not too concerned about the fee.

Leaves as a multi millionaire so understandable why he stuck around. I certainly would.

I don't think he's quite that rich. He'd have been on around £10k per week pre-tax, which is about £300,000pa after tax. Times that by his 5 year contract and you get around £1.5million. No doubt he'd be spending a bit on living costs and rent with him moving around the country on season-long loans which would reduce his wealthiness a bit. So whilst he's wealthy, he's not a multi-millionaire in the same way some Premier League footballers would be.

He was actually on £30-£40k per week on a long-term contract as a very highly regarded youngster

I heard he was on £20-25k a week which is a take home of £560-700k a year. If you aren’t a millionaire after 5 years of that then you either have a very wasteful lifestyle or don’t invest well!

It would be really interesting to see or find out what sort of incentives were attached to the Baptiste / Fosu deal. Such as promotion clause, as Brentford are on the rise atm with promotion now definitely in their sights. It could be a reasonable sum too. Or would the incentives just be in the form of a sell on clause?

Well that's most of them if Kitson's book is to be believed.
