Home Match Day Thread Pizza Trophy OUFC v Chelsea U21

You simply haven't got a clue!
I'll be having a word with Leys in the morning egg. He is aware that under Rule 4 subsection e3 point 2.3, no criticism should be directed at karl following yet another, at times, shambolic performance, against a team of kids, when karls team was quite strong. All this in a competition we should be targeting for success.

We haven’t strengthened the defence enough even with loan spaces not used so even when everyone is fit and ready to play our defence is still going to be our biggest problem weather we have a new manager or not . We are always going to concede goals until January

Ha, you dont get sacked for losing a reserve team game!
That's like saying you don't get sacked for missing your September sales target. But remove the spin, and you'll see he also missed his July, August and September targets as well.
Surely even the most ardent of Happy Clappers can see the man has to go, for the club to progress. (Apart from one of course, to whom he is the messiah).

Tonight was little more than a behind closed doors game to get players minutes in their legs. And on the whole, most will be better for it ahead of far more important games.

I want Oxford to win every game, but I'm not going to cry about this anymore than I would have jumped with joy at a win.
Behind closed doors friendly??
That is such a cliche….FFS, do behave egg. If we had won you would have spent half the night decorating the ground in bunting proclaiming a great victory, in a competition we should have targeted for success.

It's tinpot and you experiment with young players in it , no shame in that but we had our star players out there .
Behave lads!
It's tinpot, purely for the Clappers to help robinson out of a deepening hole, yet when it gets us to Wembley, it suddenly becomes a great day out, generating good money and potentially a trophy.

On Seddon tonight.

He got to the final 3rd well but every cross went out of play or didn’t beat the first defender.

It’s been like this for a while.. surely he can be coached improvement? He’s been a while.
The worrying thing with Seddon now is he’s becoming a common denominator in every poor performance/poor result. Better performances (however few) have largely been when he’s not involved and the poorest performances have normally involved him at his worst. I can’t remember seeing a defensive player quite as vulnerable as he is. He has no pace, no real quality on the ball (people who throw him that bone are being especially kind) and no IQ to know when to leave space and when not to. His redeeming quality is his engine but perhaps he wouldn’t need that if he wasn’t chasing open spaces he’d left at the wrong time or run forward when he’s never receiving the ball.

Coaching? Maybe. But I have to stick up for KR in that he’s had a very clear role in the team in 2 different set ups and whether it’s wing back or full back he cannot seem to get any kind of performance from him. Can’t say he hasn’t tried but you can ask why on Earth we are still using him when we’ve had 2 windows to address it. This is one that hasn’t worked out.

Fact. Wembley final for the Oxford brand in Asia etc.

Sutton becomes a big game for Karl now! Certain others can believe what they want.
Oh dear another Cup Final he has to negotiate. Well tonight's didn't go to plan, against the kids. We move onto Saturdays.

Well Taylor, Gorrin, Anderson, Jones and Golding so if that's all we got out of the game then it's positive for me. Obviously winning is great and i would never be happy losing or drawing but it doesn't as much in this competition.
A competition worth millions in prize money, a trip to Wembley, a trophy, and the coverage it would have given the boards Oxford brand??????????

Let me ask you this. If Karl was sacked last week and a new manager lost this game, would you react the same way? Or would you just say ‘who cares. Important results are in the league’… Rhetorical question as I think I know the answer.

Best practice is always to take it seriously and win. Particularly when trying to lift the mood around camp. But we approached it in the same spirit as every other senior club typically does - respectfully dismiss it as a fitness exercise and a bag of hassle when we already play too many games.

We’ve already got an injury ravaged squad so protecting players we can’t afford to miss and sharing the minutes out among those who need them is everything we wish they’d done sooner, before we ended up threadbare.

I watched the game tonight out of necessity but my God, it’s a pathetic competition that gets no respect from me, the fan. Strongly begrudge paying for it and I think it needs a brand refresh as a ‘fans cup’ type competition which encourages low cost football. I’d enjoy a day out at Wembley of course but let’s not kid ourselves, it’s no play off final which we have done recently and doesn’t seem to impress anyone.

The tantrums are unnecessary, especially after saturday’s vastly improved performance. If you want Karl sacked, you should be calmness personified as you’re one game closer to that happening. I don’t think you’re upset that Oxford lost in the crappy Pizza cup tonight and our huge prize money war chest at risk, I think you’re more upset that Karl lost tonight.

Exactly this, if we’d won tonight the usual suspects now using it as a stick to batter KR with would he saying ‘it’s only a bunch of kids, the result doesn’t mean anything’. Always read to twist to suit their narrative

A bunch of kids who probably earn more than our players! It was frustrating though, we were on top for a lot of the game but didn’t have much attacking threat or pattern to our play, and the subs made us sloppy.

Remember the pages that followed our victory against Orient? Mellow, AH, Leys - all rushing to celebrate a much needed victory in this all important competition!!

Hi @Scotchegg

Would that be the Leyton Orient game we won 5-0, 48 hours before the transfer window slammed shut. You then told us all we had a top 6 squad that only needed a world class right back like Djavan Anderson added to it (who I’m sure you know all about).

Keep talking.

✌🏼

You'll be able to share that post I made I guess?

Sorry but this is a ridiculous comment. First. It’s a cup game. Regardless whether it is the Papa John or FA Cup. We reached the final, back to back, of this cup just a few years ago. There is money to be won (Important for the club).

Secondly, the fact is we put out a strongish side, and still somehow lost to some youngsters. What a world of good that will do for our confidence 🙄 But yeah it’s all about getting players legs up to speed…

Pressure continues to grow for Karl.

We kept Matty Taylor on against Orient in order to get that all important confidence boosting goal, and then lost him to injury for a month.

Tonight we make a few changes late on and lose the game, but have everyone available for Saturday which is hugely more important.

I was at the game
A strange one
We looked in control apart from when Chelsea hit the post early on and I kept expecting us to add to our opener
The injury to Bate which I fear might be a bit worse than it looked seemed to unsettle us and the changes in formation didn't help
Although it's human nature to look for scapegoats when the opposition score you have to say the kid who spotted Easty off his line did well to take advantage from that distance
Then the second was a sucker punch when we gave the ball away up the field
But I think we have to keep things in proportion
We could still go through if we beat Sutton who scaped a 1 0 win after Chelsea 21s had a man sent off and had to play with 10 for a significant period
