Ex Player Jack Stevens

For whatever reason, he hasn't been at the same level of last season. That said, his level then was so high that anything below that will be disappointing to some. Can't see the clamour from some to bring Eastwood back, Stevens is still the better keeper.

A discussion for another thread maybe but Long is in the same boat.

Still our best right back but the high levels he met last year haven’t been reached for this season. He’s a first pick for our defence regardless though.

And this is where squad building becomes an issue.

Players levels dropped because they don’t have competition for their place.

I’m not sure I totally agree with this. Competition is needed to keep players sharp and to offer something different should we want to resort to it.

I don’t think players performances necessarily drop because they know there’s no other option to challenge them. KR would hoik out a non-tryer straightaway if he felt that was the case. In the case of Seddon, I think he simply needs a rest. He’s played more matches than anyone else this season.

As for the stats on Stevens, they are interesting to note. It does feel that we’ve conceded a number of goals from outside the area lately. I guess what the stats don’t show up is a defence that sits high or leaves a gaping hole during a counter attack. Regardless, something for our young keeper to work on if the data shows it’s an area of weakness.

That’s some stats

I suppose most goals we see we never go ‘Stevens fault’

Not a lot the man can do about tap ins from poor defensive set up, and the number of wondersaves he pulls off outweighs his contribution towards the goals we concede

Re Boltons first, i fail to see how either he or Sam Long can have the finger pointed at them...if as some say Sam got too close the fella runs down the left for an easy cross and to be fair that's what he looked like doing..Jack positions himself and then the fella decides to shoot and the ball goes through Sams legs.

I would say great skill by John rather than any error on our part

As for the Windass Goal, that was such a fantastic pass and move it was in the net before any possible reaction, a Brilliant Goal

Are you suggesting that a lot of back up keepers are better than Eastwood?
I would be really surprised if more than a handful are better than Eastwood.

Not ‘a lot’ but I bet there are 7/8 clubs with better. Eastwood is a very average L1 keeper nowadays

Sell Stevens in the summer and bring in a better, more experienced keeper for a fraction of the cost which won't be hard.

I think having glandular fever is a pretty reasonable reason as to why this may have happened. Isn't always the easiest thing to diagnose, which could account for some sub-par performances pre-time out and the recovery can take quite a while too. Still think he's worth persevering with over Eastwood.

More than one statistician has that. It does appearthat unless it's a reflex save he does seem slow to get to shots.

xGOT always comes across to me, though, as a bit of a subjective statistic.

I know it's supposed to measure the likelihood of a goal post-shot, taking into account ball placement and speed.

But I presume we don't have numerous cameras at the Kasstad (or elsewhere in League One) measuring ball speed and spin, and feeding that into an AI algorithm to calculate an accurate xGOT on every shot? I assume it's just a guy at Opta (or wherever) watching a video with a freeze frame and a spreadsheet? Correct me if I'm wrong!

That all being said......whilst I don't think there have been too many goals this season where I've immediately thought "That's Jack's fault".....there have also been far, far fewer examples than last season of thinking "How the hell did Jack save that one". Which is to say that he's been pretty average this year - not many screw-ups, but not many worldies either.

With both keepers, there haven't been many obvious mistakes, but all the long shots seem to go in! Not sure if that's because the attackers aren't being closed down though.
