Home Match Day Thread 14/02/2021 L1 OUFC v Wigan

Credit to the Groundstaff, superb job. Likewise, to the club, Wigan, match officials and anybody else with the fire that ensured the game continued.

That was a hard watch. Partly down to Wigan playing well to their plan, partly down to conditions (ie. weather and a dry pitch combining in the 1st half.and partly it just wasn't clicking for us for a lot of the game.

Winnall impressed me today and that is why KR signed him. For not a particularly big man, he doesn't have half cause problems aerially for opponents and the positioning for his goal was excellent off an equally excellent cross by Barker.

We just have to accept I think that Barker isn't physically going to outmuscle opponents for the ball but he will scare the hell out of them if he gets the ball to feet. Against higher teams on the break I think will be where he stands out more as we will be playing more on the break and opponents won;t be sitting so deep.

Gorrin needs to go back to a more simple game rather than trying to make so many killer balls which is when he is at his best. Cam Bran likewise wasn't at his best but if he keeps playing regularly getting the minutes, he will get back to his best as he is too good a player for him not to. Kelly was at best ok today.

A mention for Forde who did a decent job today for me.

Excellent persistence from Elliott Moore for his goal. That he was able to beat 2 of their central defenders to the ball in that situation and not snatch at the chance showed some real composure.

And finally Mark Sykes deserved motm today. Some of his runs were very good and fully deserved his start. Looked the player again we were getting excited about at times last season. Good save from their keeper to stop him scoring. Add a bit more end product and he will be pushing for a regular start again.

A bizarre Valentine’s Day that❤

They even got the man of the match right. Sykes needs to start every week. Henry is a bench man now.

Was impressed by Forde, he was very involved today and didn’t waste the ball much.

Credit to Wigan, on that showing nowhere near the bottom 4.

Robinson’s subs again excellent. He kept the right players on this week.

Don’t want Kelly near the starting side. He’s simply not big, simply not quick, simply not good enough.

Elliot Moore wanted that goal no matter what, absolutely brilliant play by Moore

I think until Maguane is fully fit, Sykes is the man to play alongside Brannagan in CM. Kelly has had enough chances now and he gets carried through too many games. We have some tough fixtures ahead and I’m afraid he’s just not influential enough to justify a place.
Before the game KR said he picks Kelly because he does lots of things people don't see!! Well Karl, I didn't see many 'things' today.
Pleased for Sykes, have always thought he's a decent player and one that can influence a game.
We were mediocre today but it was pleasing to see us battle back for the win considering all the adversity!!

With Sat and Tues games going foward, I can pretty much guarantee that Henry won't be a 'bench man'. He still has a lot to offer and he will get plenty of game time going forward as players come in and out. With McGuane hopefully back soon too we will hopefully have lots of options and bodies going forward. Sykes poor form a few weeks ago demonstrates that players will come in and out of form.

The strength of the squad now is so important with all of the games coming up.
We have a really strong bench and Agyei, Hall, didn't play and Henry, Long McGuane were out injured.
The real test will come v Pompey, Peterborough, Lincoln , but we are in
good shape ( and are showing bottle in coming back from being behind)
