League One Wigan Athletic woes

It would though. They finished with 56 points, 12 points deducted they would of finished bottom. 1 point below Hull.
Could Wigan escape when they appeal, now we have to wait on the result for Derby md their financial irregularities.

Well can't see how they can apply a points deduction to Wigan this season and not to sheff Wednesday, Derby. I got a feeling Wigan will stay in the championship and points will be deducted for the start of the season. Would mean Barnsley going down though.

So Sheffield Wednesday's offense took place in the 2017-18 season, so it was always fairly arbitrary which year the punishment was going to be applied.

I guess the EFL would rather impose a penalty at a time when the club has a fighting chance to play their way out of trouble, rather than the consequences being retroactive.

Besides which, if Derby have done the same thing and if they are going to face the same points deduction - well that would be utterly meaningless if they applied it for this past season. You can't (or at least you shouldn't - the EFL is capable of anything!) have a situation where two clubs have committed the same offense, and one is punished by relegation whilst the other gets off scott free.

Yh I agree I think all 3 clubs should start with - 12 next season. Wigan was going to be shafted either way. If they got relegated then the - 12 points would have been for the start of the league one season.

So will Charlton present a legal challenge against Wednesday's points deduction being deferred until next season? Given the difference in TV money they might think it worthwhile. This could still get messy.

This just goes to show how corrupt the EFL are

Now where have we seen this happen before?
And then if they can’t start the season tragic as it may seem then it has to be another relegation or a big points deduction.......but knowing the corrupt EFL they will brush it under the carpet.

Technically they set their standard last year and if they can’t start the season then they get kicked out of the EFL. Will that happen to a club like Wigan who have been FA Cup winners and a premier league fairly recently? I doubt it!

League 2 could end up being the home for ex premier league basket case clubs.

Birmingham, Sheffield Wednesday and Charlton to follow?

To be fair, the EFL set two completely different standards last year.

I suspect, given their recent history, they'll see Wigan as more of a Bolton than a Bury.......

They should forget "who" the club is and just apply the rules equitably and fairly no matter if it is Wigan, Bury or Birmingham.

That`ll never happen but hey ho............... can but wish.

Here you go Wigan, the rules:

1.You are not allowed to play anyone over 17 for the first 12 games

2.You may pick any match among the first 12 which you do not wish to play and postpone it without consequence

3.After 12 games you must sign a squad's with of journeyman

4.From the 12th game onwards you are permitted to be slightly better than one particularly poor team

The following is for guidance only and is our best advice and what we consider the 'spirit of the rules"

1.We advise that you find another club in the same situation as you - we, the league, will expel this team ensuring that you do not suffer the indignity of finishing 24th

2.The following season should see a return to reckless spending

3.At no point must anything be learned from recent events

Good luck!
