Away Match Day Thread +++ 03/08/2019 L1: Sunderland v OUFC MDT +++

Just back - what a day.

Went in to it hoping for a point, left incredibly happy (haven't read back yet but we were much the better side, Sunderland saved by some poor - to the verge of suspicious - refereeing).

Our attacking play was immense. Would say we don't need a striker but Mackie can't keep that up all season.

Fantastic, energised performance. I'd say we don't have to worry about relegation this year but it's only game 1.

The locals really aren't happy are they? Still not accepted they are a L1 club by the looks of it, and annoyed at the owners for where they are and the manager for his tactics.

In comparison, we have issues too, but everything seems a lot tighter and connected top to bottom. We lack depth, but for some decisions out of our control, we would have won and played the better football. It could be a very hard season for them, and it seems the PR/spin is running thin on some as reality is setting in.

On reflection, KR was remarkably calm post match for what must have been a challenging game to manage. Clearly annoyed but philosophical about it all. If we can get the right players in, we will be an incredibly annoying team to play against.

Alternate angle of the Ruffels penalty decision. Can clearly see he has took the ball before the man [can see this as ball changes direction before man makes contact with Ruffels]. Poor by REF.

About 30 secs later there's a clip of them giving Brannagan abuse and he's loving it.

It was a penalty all day long.

We looked so tired after 30mins, especially Woodburn and Fosu. Really glad we managed a point in the end which I didn’t think we’d do once giving a penalty away so soon in the 2nd half.
If that, was a penalty all day long what about everytime fosu got the ball in the first half he got chopped ? The ref was f*****g awful and so biased ..... I believe the rules say if you take the ball no foul?? I stand to be corrected bit shite refereeing gave away 3 points for us today

That disallowed goal looks a bit harsh, there was a Sunderland defender between Mackie and the keeper. So is he not being obstructed by his own player?

I actually think that the pen was far from the ref's worst decision.

Ruffels might have gotten a slight touch on the ball, but it wasn't much (and he was stupid for diving in there) and it's somewhat forgivable for the ref to have missed it. For what it's worth, both Jerome and Nick thought it was a pen live, and weren't convinced that it wasn't after replays.

But some of the free kicks and even corners he gave in the last ten minutes were utterly laughable. Really did look like he was trying his best to get Sunderland an undeserved winner.

Deja vu..........
Same as last season for much of the game....
The yellows came out of the traps determined to press high, be aggressive in the defence and keep the ball moving in the middle of the park...
The goal came after the home side defenders dilly and dallied with the ball in an area they shouldn’t be doing it howveryou could argue that we should and could have been 1-0 up before the goal came. The next 15 - 20 minutes after the goal was all Oxford and when Dickie slammed the ball into the back of the net with a bullet header from a corner it sent the 1100 or so Yellows fans absolutely crazy albeit only for about 10 seconds until it turned to heads in hands and hands on heads as fans were looking around to actually find out why the goal was disallowed.
It seemed to disrupt us as a team for the remainder of the first half as Sunderland seemed to have more of the ball without really doing much with it and when we did try and break away there was always a foot left in or a push on an Oxford player to break the play up and on the half time whistle the 2nd goal we so deserved did not come...
The 2nd half was all about one man, no it wasn’t Ben Woodburn, or any other yellows players, it wasn’t Karl Robinson, it wasn’t even any of the Sunderland players of any of their coaches, it was the shower of sh1t of a referee who lost the whole concept of the game with a string of bad decisions, bias, incompetence, lack of experience, not up to reffing a big crowd, who knows.. we can’t change it, he will certainly know by now if he has seen replays of the disallowed goal and the penalty incident that one if not both decisions were incorrect which cost us 3 valuable points on the road.
We all would have settled for a point earlier this week and two weeks ago it was more like keeping the score down as there was little activity from the club in attracting good players in time for the season opener.
So all in all, a long journey, proper home fans, a cracking stadium, the yellows were there in numbers and sang their hearts out and although early days it looks like we have the basis of a team on the pitch to be proud of....

Well, maybe. But I've been chuckling on and off all night remembering him complaining, in that unique scouse manner of his, about how out of order the ref was for not booking him.

I've had one or two reservations about KR in the past, but I am starting to warm to the guy

After 1 game we're 12th in the league.
At the same stage last season we were 24th and finished the season in 12th.
So by my calculation, a similar 12 place improvement this season would see us finish .........1st.
We're gonna win the league!

Just watched the highlights on Quest and it was obvious Josh got to the ball first. That should never have been a penalty.

Meanwhile I predict Ross will be sacked within the first few games and Michael Appleton will take his place and transform their performances. I’m not interested in Sunderland of course and it would be bitter sweet to see Mapp back in to management with another team . He deserves the opportunity though and really, really needs to get back in ASAP or risk being forgotten.

Yeah, there’s no doubting the referee was f*****g shite and that’s putting it politely, but I thought it was a penalty. Ruffels should have stayed on his feet as the guy was going nowhere, but I’m sure the referee would have found another excuse to get them an equaliser or ultimately a winner which him and that f*****g useless linesman were trying to do.

Surely a 12 place improvement would see us finish bottom of the Championship this season..not bad going having started it in League 1!

f**k I hope you are well wide of the mark on that DW.
We really don’t want Appleton any where near Sunderland or league 1 right now.
We need jack Ross to lumber on until well after Christmas when his complete lack of management skill is exposed too late for them to pose any risk of getting in the way of our promotion charge!??

I'm proud of the team and KR. After all the endless weeks of negativity on this forum by the majority of the fans giving the board and KR a**e holes, its very satisfying to see the team put in a winning performance, although the ref did not agree. So many fans on here are bed wetters who are all too happy to put the boot in rather than sit back and wait for the transfer period to unfold and play out. I do wander how they can reflect on their posts as being supportive of the club they claim to care about.

A very good point to start the season. Enjoyed in particular Fosu’s performance, even though over-elaborate at times but definitely put in a shift but the team overall were bang on. Badly let down by the referee. Streets ahead of that debacle at Barnsley last year. Onwards and upwards!

Robbed by the ref who was consistently biased against us and really seemed to want them to get a winner late on.

Dickie was top quality, generally we were good, need a quick striker desperately as Mackie just can't put that much into it every match.

Sunderland aren't all that, will struggle. Toon was buzzing last night
