Home Match Day Thread +++ 09/02/2019 OUFC v Sunderland match day thread +++

So, that was a truly cracking match today. Some really good performances from us as we dominated large chunks of the game. Our wing play at times was a sight to see and we are blessed with two excellent players in whyte and Graham (and Browne off the bench). We are racking up some serious talent in this side and they are beginning to play some wonderful stuff. Dickie and Nelson were good today too. The tireless Brannagan ran himself to ground.
A word on the fans too. Take a bow people... We f*****g rocked! Well done all yes, even you Mr Robinson.
Proud of you.

Good result today lads. I know you think KR is bad but eff me is Nathan Jones out of his league

Edited for my bad english

Totally disagree about the atmosphere I thought it was bang average from where I was sat .

We should have won that, all of our players need a lot of shooting practise.

I’m surprised at the positive comments for Hanson. He improved as the game went on to be fair, but in the first half McGeady had him running scared, and it was his error which led to the corner for their goal - he gave the ball away with a brainless pass inside when he’d bombed forwards and was caught totally out of position. He did do one great, flat cross to create a headed chance for Mackie, but overall he looks a liability every game for me, can’t defend one on one, can’t read the ball in the air, no pace.

Oxford look really attractive from an attacking point of view and have very good options now.

Gavin Whyte’s searing pace and Jordan Graham’s ability on the ball, running and balance are
worth the entrance money alone at the moment and when you add in Browne’s
strength and pace and Sinclair’s blistering speed too, then we should have enough to get the points to survive.
Mackie is now fully fit and has really improved his play recently.

Today was as good a L1 match you will see and Oxford’s second half showing was tremendous I thought.

Played them off the pitch in the second half. No stupid defensive mistakes. Should have won by three. Not unhappy altogether though.

Bloodclots are not going up unless they can beat small teams like us. Shite team, shite support.

Agree with most of that but Chrissy Allen teaching anyone about crossing is an interesting one, the amount of times he used to run out of pitch and not get the ball across, I like to think he was given that stretch of the London road wall he collided with on many occasions.

I don't disagree about Chrissy Allen running off the pitch. :)

That said, he can demand perfection as a coach as it is always do as I say, not as I did. Plus he didn't do a bad job for us overall.

Very enjoyable and (even better) very encouraging.

Whyte and Graham had them on toast - I thought Graham was the better of the two but it was close! I'm still not that impressed with Mackie - he spent a lot of his time jumping into people without even looking where the ball was and wasn't really that effective. I was surprised that Sinclair didn't come on earlier - speaking of whom, I thought his movement was good, he was unselfish and calm to lay on the goal and he showed some excellent touches. Dickie (again) was pretty solid - I think he is quickly getting out of the sticky patch he had. We lost the midfield at times, and their goal was a bit of a sucker punch - so there are of course still things to work on. I guess you can add 'finishing' to that, we should have taken one of those first half chances.

I didn't think Sunderland were that impressive (a lot of long ball, only two shots on target and none - apart from the goal - that were at all threatening) and were their 'supporters' asleep until they scored?

The ref was terrible. He should have been wearing a white and red striped shirt for the first 86 minutes - I was amazed that he didn't find a foul to give when their bloke fell over before we scored! And apparently he has been fast-tracked from lower down in the pyramid because he is so good. Heaven help us.

And we are (just) outside the drop zone - we now need to win a couple of the upcoming 'easier' fixtures (which are still mostly against clubs above us in the table of course!).

Edit - having looked at the replay (https://www.skysports.com/watch/vid...ons/league-one/11633153/oxford-1-1-sunderland) it was definitely not a foul in the lead up to our goal. Their player just runs across in front of Sinclair to obstruct him and falls over.

Nothing wrong with Hanson

I think today really confirmed the scale of underachievement this season. With about twenty 'ifs' this side should be far higher up the league.

Went nuts on the equalizer partly because we should have been out of sight. Some woeful finishing and final touches until that point had me thinking the most likely next goal would come for them from a corner.

As much as we were better in the second, Sunderland seemed dead after the break, had absolutely nothing and looked pedestrian, until they were able to bring on a bit of spark. On that form, they look the opposite of us, a side at the top that should be much lower. Barnsley are the best side I've seen us against this season.

Anyway, good defensive performance, Hanson was steadier as was Dickie and Nelse worked hard to handle both Grigg then Wyke. Ruffel is developing a good partnership with Graham and even overlaps a bit.

In the middle, Mous needed time to get up to speed but was better in the second, Henry seemed to be the crux of our best play but seemed to lose his touch once or twice. Graham was a constant threat and Whyte was the best player on the pitch. Such a sharp player and has been consistently threatening.

Nice to have some actual subs to call on too, and I thought they were the right switches at the right time. To field Whyte, Brown, Sinclair and Graham in the last ten as an attacking unit is something that CBs in this league would not look forward to.

Finally a word for the 'Ref'. You can take the Ref out the Conference but you can't take the Conference out of the Ref. Woeful.

Funnily enough I thought Henry had an average game today. That said he never stopped trying to get into dangerous positions or let his head drop. His performance not being to his normal standard may be fully understandable considering his kid. Also, he has earnt on off day considering how many points he has got us.

Agree entirely. He can tackle but does some suicidal passing and positioning.

He has a family problem at the moment so not surprising he had an off day. Would have subbed him earlier.

The options we have now are good, so if Henry needs a little rest or whatever then he can. Either Kashi next to Mouse and Cam at 10 or Carruthers as a straight swap. Still one or two players that are essential if we want a result, but I'm pretty certain we'll stay up now.

Gutsy performance against a team that contrary to many on here I thought were actually quite good. They deserved their half team lead but second half we really upped the pressing and got the ball out to the wingmen much more frequently.

Credit to Robinson for well timed substitutions and our crowd for sticking with the team.

On the debit side what a soft goal to give away. Poor marking!

Really enjoyed the Mous performance. He’s a wily old pro who has been excellent all season.

But it’s the Whyte/Graham show that is really improving our fortunes.

Finally the Mackem supporters were fieldmouse like. Very quiet. Why? Were they intimidated by the atmosphere??
