Home Match Day Thread +++ 29/01/2019 OUFC v Barnsley Match Day Thread +++

Before the game I would have been happy with 1 point, however again we have been let down by our defensive frailties, looking at the league table we have missed out massively by not getting all 3 points.

I thought KR’s touchline antics were beyond reproach tonight, felt ashamed to be associated with his largely unnoticed, unsporting(cheating)attempt to have Lyndsey sent off.
Also agree that the resulting stoppage led directly to Barnsley’s first goal .

Given the second half of your sentence, I don't think this means what you think it means...

Hard to be happy with a point when we were two up. But before these run of games I’d of taken a draw against an in form Barnsley.

Having watched the goals on sky
Both goals as we know were from down our right
Their first, as the bell is about to to passed to the scorer, we have 3 players near the ball but nobody close enough to stop the pass
The gap beteeen Nelson and Hanson is so big the pass to their 29 is simple, and he’s completely unmarked...... Hanson, who I think has done well lately, is ball watching and allows the 29 an unopposed run into box and shot
Their second, a mistake by Hanson, which allows an unopposed cross, but then Dickie let’s the number 19, who’s actually pointing to where he wants the ball, another unopposed run into box, before scoring, Dickie was too slow and not close enough.
All that aside we did play very very well
We need to cut out these defensive mistakes and, even tho it won’t happen, we do need another centre back.

Another good performance tonight. I thought in the first half, tactically we were pretty much perfect. They were always threatening but no final touch. Kept Woodrow very quiet and restricted Mowatt from dictating the play. Second half started much the same before their roughing up started taking effect. No doubting we were up against a quality team. What we'd give to bring on Moore as a sub. That said their keeper pulled off some amazing saves and if one or more of those chances went in, who knows. Good performances - Mous, Whyte, Nelse, Mackie and Bran. Iffy ones from Dickie and Hanson who both countered good bits with shocking bits. Worry about Easty too. Steady night but his knee is an obvious discomfort.

Mackie was brilliant to watch last night. Young players could learn a lot from his approach to the game, he seems to play every game like it's his last. He gets criticised for not scoring many but his work off the ball both last night and against Portsmouth was superb.

I agree with that.
He gets a lot of criticism and has almost certainly played too much (at times he could have been taken off if we had enough on the bench)
But he is a nightmare to play against. At times last night Barnsley simply couldn't cope with his aggression and tenacity.
The attitude of the players last night was spot on and if we can carry that into games against the lower teams we really should be ok

I thought the Mackie shot had crossed the line..close call;

We deserved all three points yesterday we were the better side and didn’t have a great deal of luck. Having said that I would have taken a point before kick off.
We do look a good side now and hopefully with one or two signings before the deadline we can push up the table to safety.

I thought it was an entertaining watch last night. I think they played into our hands a bit with the long ball stuff they tried to start with, and then reverted to somewhat after they'd equalised. We battled hard and were a bit unlucky not to be further ahead - their keeper (who had a real curate's egg of an evening) and the woodwork combining to keep it to two. Mind you, Eastwood made a couple of excellent stops as well.
The officiating was down to it's normal standard - how they kept 11 men on the pitch I will never know. They were cynical cloggers and should have been punished, the longer it went on the more chance there was of serious injury. The Barnsley fans were shocking. Fair dos for getting there on such a horrible night (but nowhere near as bad as suggested it would be), but there was little vocal support for their team - instead, they spent the time barracking them. A team that had won six on the trot and their support were on their backs. Shocking. They only came to life once they scored. I guess they feel entitled to beat us easily or something because they were in the Championship recently - very poor.
As others have said, disappointing to only get a point because of the lead, but I would have taken a point before kickoff. Of course, once we sign Billy The Fish later on today, the only way is up!

Another good performance, very unlucky to only score twice.
Eastwood put Bury behind him, kicking looked good as well so looks like his injury has cleared up.
Nelson was outstanding, one of several MOTM contenders for me.
Ruffels was really solid + good goal, Hanson looked ok bar the mistake.
Graham + Whyte look so dangerous running at defenders.
Set pieces! Was it the wind? We looked so dangerous for nearly everyone of them.

Special mentions for Mous + Mackie however, both ran about like men half their age for 90mins. With Kashi and another ST coming in, I think both (but Mackie especially) could improve further now we have the option to rest and rotate.

Thought the ref was one of the best we’ve had tonight as well, let the game flow really well. Once players realise they’re not going to get fouls easily, it makes the game a lot more enjoyable. I thought the Whyte-Lindsay “tackle” was a definite yellow at first, but watching it back it looks like he leads with his elbow so I guess they were lucky not to go down to 10 men at 2-0. Would blame Kettle for this considering Whyte was taken out about 2 feet in front of him, wasn’t even on the pitch and still managed to get KR + SD booked.

Shame Browne wasn't fit. If he came on towards the end with his pace against their defence then maybe could have won it. Disappointed not to get 3 points but as others say 4 from Barnsley and Pompey is more than most expected and hopefully can build on this. Now let's get this bloody striker sorted
