We rushed back from holiday to go to the Tottenham game. Got into the ground and the first thing we thought was, s**t, what are these prison camp fences?

Wasn't just fences, they started off with barbed wire around the top as well. I guess you had to control the Osler Road Hit Squad somehow...

It wasn't as if there were any problems at the ground the year before, apart from Pompey first game of the season taking over the LRT before anyone got in the ground then being thrown out onto the pitch when the Oxford lads rocked up at 2:50.

Don’t forget the Birmingham City match.
But yeah, it was Maxwell showing off.

didnt he (Maxwell) pronounce something along the line of that he would make the Manor the most secure in English football
before erecting those horrible cage fences?

Yeah, something like that. Would have been better off putting them round the yaght, then he might not have fallen in...

Yuck!

Granted not an OUFC 'Yesteryear' , but IMO worth marking nonetheless, albeit a day late

20 years ago yesterday:- Germany 1 England 5

We were at a recording of Robot Wars that day (great fun!). Craig Charles - the host - was hardly present, he was watching the match on a telly in his dressing room. But he did keep popping out onto the arena/set to give us score updates!

A little bit off topic but interesting? Each month WSC magazine features a final league table and a short summary of the season. This month its Div 2 2013-2014. It mentions Oxford falling away badly to finish 8th after Chris Wilder resigned to join Northampton. There is a pic of Wilder holding a cobblers scarf aloft. Cobblers along with wycombe wobblers finished strongly to avoid relegation - Torquay went down.

Other things of note- Chesterfield were champs under Paul Cook, (was that the season we beat them 1-0 away?) Scunny were second with a club record of 28 matches unbeaten, and a certain Sam Winnall scoring 23 goals to be the leagues top scorer.

Portsmouth playing in tier 4 for the first time since 79-80 had a crowd of 18181 for the opening day visit of Oxford. a new attendance record for league 2.

One or 2 clubs there gone in very different directions

I always said Wilder kept two teams up that season.
