Memory Lane Yesteryear

In 1985-86 we gave every visiting team a commemorative crystal ball.

Yeah, we started off doing that on the pitch before every game, but then moved it inside later in the season.

Wonder how many of them still exist... I'm sure they are pride of place in the trophy rooms at Old Trafford and Anfield.

I'm more surprised to see we'd never played West Ham before that! Are there any other clubs who we first played in the top flight? Spurs maybe? Anyone else?
In an alternative universe somewhere we also played Napoli and Dukla Prague (no less!!) for the first time the follow season on our way to beating Atletico Madrid (first time) in the final of the UEFA cup.

Spurs are one, I tried checking the other big guns who rarely drop down the leagues but we had played them in cups, so might just be those two.

United went 3-0 up and had to withstand sustained pressure from the O’s who pulled a goal back through a Fin Stevens o.g and a volley from
Ruel Sotiriou. They also hit the crossbar too.

Rodrigues was the U’s star man putting in a virtuoso performance.

I remember having my head in my hands after Rúben's shot hit the post that I missed Bodin's finish. Great performance from him that day.

Not sure whether this is one for this thread, or for Ex-Player one, but here goes...

From what I can see, while set squad numbers became a thing in the top flight with the establishment of the Prem (92/93) they weren't required in the Football League until the 99/00 season.

I've just managed to get my hands on a 95/96 home kit with the number 6 on the back. Supposedly it's match worn, though I take that with a pinch of salt, as many shirts you find online claim to be that.

My question is - who predominantly wore the number 6 shirt that season?

I'd say Gilchrist at that sort of time.

If I recall Houghton's goal was a shot that took an unnatural bounce on the artificial pitch they had at the time.

Interesting that Jeremy Charles missed the bus but didn't even play!!

Yeah, he mistimed a side volley straight down into the pitch, then the exaggerated bounce of the plastic pitch took it up and looped it over their keeper.

Oxford Utd appoint locally born 38 year old Des Buckingham as the club’s new Head Coach on a three and a half year contract
after Liam Manning left for Bristol City earlier in the month. Buckingham was previously Head Coach at Mumbai City FC since 2021 and a hefty compensation package has been agreed.

An incensed Maurice Evan’s, I wonder what that looked like.

Maurice Evans was known for his quiet nature but went berserk after a match at Everton in September 1986.

John Aldridge wrote in his autobiography:

“ We should have had a penalty with a chance to make it 2-2 ; instead we lost 3-1.Maurice Evans was going berserk, kicking buckets of water around and swearing at the referee.I’ve never seen him so upset before.”

It must have been something about Goodison Park because the previous season Evans entered the pitch at the final whistle to remonstrate with the referee.

To be fair, I'd be pretty furious if I had to go and work on a Saturday in Liverpool.

I think it was Steve Hardwick that "kicked the bucket" so to speak!.....and it WAS a penalty.

I was at the game, it was a blatant penalty, we stopped, they booted the ball upfield to Lineker, who scored on the breakaway.

Still, at least we got revenge later in the season and ripped the League Championship out of their hands when we beat them at The Manor.

That's two different seasons I think mate. Lineker was only at Everton in 1985-86 and the match referenced here was played in November 1986. It sounds like something similar happened at Goodison the year before, so I think you might be thinking of a 0-2 at Goodison in October '85 - https://rageonline.co.uk/mainpage/fixture/1985-10-05/

Yeah you might be right there. Did we get robbed for penalties twice in a row at Goodison?
