Transfer News Transfer window 2020/21

I think the problem with Nico Jones is his personality rather than his footballing abilty. Nobody can doubt that hes a good player but he seems to be a bit ‘timid’. Robinson himself has joked that they've tried different things to bring him out of his shell and make him more assertive including having to tell Faz a new fact that hes learned every day. Apparently Faz intimidates him a little bit.. A John Terry character - for all of their less likeable qualifies- would have no problem in first team mens football at 18 years of age, Nico just seems a ‘nicer’ character.. Lets hope he’s just a late bloomer.

Maybe get Gary Briggs in to give all our young defenders a few pointers? ;)

Not many 18 year olds play regularly at centre half though do they. It is such a specialised position.

I get the feeling we will hold off on the LB for now and give Ruffles a little longer, think we’ll prioritise the LW.

Ay

Australia? The cultural differences would be too great, surely

Possibly, but a pretty unique situation where in ~10 days a majority of the league is about to come up on a free transfer...players will probably accept pretty poor wages in order to continue professional football.

Not saying it’s an absolute goer, but if you are fishing in the free transfer pond, this is pretty significant and provides an interesting angle

Liberato Cacace of Wellington Phoenix would be worth a punt. 19 year old attacking full back who impressed when I saw them on BT Sport. And signing him wouldn't be a problem in this window as he has an Italian passport I think.

Already moved to Belgium! Will see lots of talent like McGree coming over to Europe I suspect!

It was suggested on here that we have spoken to Luke Garbutt and Marcus Maddison during this window. I imagine their wage demands would have been stretching to begin with, yet alone now when we are needing other reinforcements too.

As for Nico Jones, I get the impression the maturing he needs to do, is off the pitch.
Noticeably "goes live" on Instagram fairly regularly late into the evening, and is driving about in a car with friends whilst posing away to the camera. Of course, this just highlights he is an 18 year old lad, but sometimes to make it in the game, you have to grow above your years pretty quickly.

Luke Garbutt and Marcus Maddison are a few weeks away from the likelihood of facing a year out of the game, and once you drop out it's very hard to get another chance. You would imagine that Garbutt has a few quid in the bank, and Maddison would have been on a decent wage too - but neither will fancy a "normal" job.

You would think that their wage demands would be dropping by the hour, and they may present a gamble. Maddison could be great at this level, but his attitude will need addressing. Maybe a pay as you go deal, or one heavily linked to performances may work, but I wouldn't be too disappointed if we looked elsewhere.

You would hope 18 year old professional footballers would know better than to carry on like that, totally unprofessional, especially as he was seen. This though is what was highlighted by Junior, when we signed him, namely potential, but with a questionable attitude.
You would have hoped KR would have said something to him. Clearly he isn't listening.

Pretty mad what's happening down there. Presumably the costs to the individual player of a relocation would be enormous though - relocating from Australia to the UK can't be an easy thing to do. Do you (or anyone else) happen to know what the new cap permits regarding these kinds of relocation costs? The EFL regulations only say, "When calculating total salary spending, the ‘cap’ includes: Basic Wages;... Other fees and expenses paid directly or indirectly to all registered players." If Oxford United bought a house, say, and allowed the player to live in it free of charge, would that constitute an 'expense paid indirectly'?

Also, people saying we could have a look at Maddison, we literally don't have a back four as it stands! Surely if this suspect start to the season has taught us anything it's that we got pretty absurdly lucky with the lack of injuries to our defence last season, and we need to bring in backups as a priority?

We could just buy wives/parents/children a house or whatever. Being a footballer is a very chaotic job so new signings might also need a PA to help and there's no reason they can't be a highly paid relative.

Wasn't it the house buying thing that Saracens tried to get around the salary cap in rugby?

Someone like a Marcus Maddison is exactly what ww need on the pitch. That "bit of magic/unpredictable" that we just dont have currently.

Garbutt is a millionaire, hes not going to be in any rush.

Well I for one didn't know that he'd been seen driving a car with his friends! And staying up late too?

Truly shocking. I'll be writing to Tiger about this.
