Yeah agreed. And it isn't just Test cricket finishing, the County Championship is also on pause, so there is no red ball cricket being played. We have a month of The Hundred and the One Day Cup.
Why? - it bollox (IMO), and double bollox in comparison to the Ashes series too

Plus we have the whole of September with International 20's and one dayers, understandable with the world cup in October.
Looking at next year's England home fixtures there are no Tests until 10th July , 3 against Windies. Then a gap with 2 against Sri Lanka in August.
20's against Pakistan in May then nothing at all in June which I presume is the Hundred and one day cup being brought forward.
All does suggest to me that Test Cricket has to fit around all else.
Money, money money!!
June next year is the T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA. Looking at the fixtures, I would presume The Hundred will be squeezed in from Aug 1st to Aug 20th. They try to keep it in August because of the school holidays.

To be fair to Stokes and the selectors, they were right on Crawley ( despite many suggesting that they were wrong)

Bairstow recovered ( averaged 40 and his keeping improved in the last 2 Tests) and Moeen justified his selection ( no real alternatives)

Bad decisions/ catching in the first couple of Tests cost us.
I've been thinking exactly the same over the past few weeks - Crawley did brilliantly in the end and who was actually going to replace him? Both Burns' and Sibley's techniques are severely exposed at Test level and no one else has made a compelling case at county level.

Foakes is probably the one player who might have had a look in but Stokes and McCullum seem to be prepared to give key players a whole series to prove themselves

As for Ali - well, who else and he made a couple of telling contributions with bat and ball.

India now becomes interesting - no Broad, Anderson ( I would guess) or Ali. Rehan will probably tour on the back of last winter but certainly not based on this summer's form. Foakes will come back into contention, Tongue showed enough to merit a place and Leach should be fit. Root will be expected to bowl more than a few overs. Maybe a new face or two from county cricket?

The bowling is going to be the challenge in the next few years.
As you say, no Anderson and Broad and Wood pretty injury prone. Oh and no Stokes as an all rounder.
Stokes was apparently bowling off spin in the nets. Not sure how serious this is.
So... who will be the seamers in India? Presumably Robinson IF fit. Who else though?

Potts did OK against Ireland so must be in the thinking.

Very sad that we don't really consider Archer these days due to his glass elbow. If he'd been available this Summer. to rotate with Wood, I think the Urn would have been ours.

Not sure Archer will play another Test sadly.

No, he has T20 specialist written all over him unfortunately - should he ever get fit enough to play again.

Jamie Smith could well tour as the new potential batting option.

After Pope's injury, I would have played Foakes instead of Ali.
Yes Moeen made a significant contribution on the last day of the series, but not much before that - averaged 25 with the bat and more than 50 with the ball.

Anyways, we've had that argument.

Getting 20 wickets in a Test in India is going to be a challenge and a half.
We're going to be relying on Leach but we need to find a second spinner. And - without the two old-timers - who is going to be effective amongst our pace bowlers in India? Wood, probably. Robinson, maybe. But how many Tests can we get out of each of them? Need a couple of others with some pace and mastery of reverse swing. Tongue?

Joe Root took 5/8 in a game last time we were out there, if you fancy a bit of KR Fullbacks style squad selection.

Actually Root is a fairly reliable second/third spinner and I wouldn't be surprised to see him bowl more.

I seem remember at the beginning of this series you doubted the ability of this team to take 20 wickets Tony. That hasn’t been the problem under Stokes so far, although India, with its Ashwin ready wickets, is a completely different challenge.

I assume you’re still advocating the inclusion of Rehan, in spite of a terrible bowling summer so far?
