Five years on from referendum, it turns out there were far more EU nationals in the UK than was thought.

Why would that be?? Could it be it`s actually rather nice and welcoming here rather than elsewhere??

Equally AMAZING is that we now know who is here so we can plan and ensure services are able to cope..............

Probably because FOM was taken too far across the entire EU.
Walk-in with an EU passport, gets checked, gets waved through and nobody checks if you leave as long as you are an EU citizen.

That’s Britain’s fault not Europe’s. There was nothing stopping us checking who comes in and out. That’s not what FOM was about. It wasn’t „go where you like mate“.

Pre-Covid & Brexit it happened all over certainly in Germany, France, Spain, Italy & Croatia when we were travelling.

No paperwork or check-in/out card/visa affair like Turkey.

You can drive through the border from France to Spain with no checks, same from Germany into France.

Stayed with friends in France, drove to Barcelona for 2 days 1 French car & 1 British in convoy, never stopped in either direction.

I know, but that’s not Britain. We were checking passports ffs. Why didn’t we know who was coming and going?
It’s very helpless to say that we had to leave the EU to save us from our own laziness!

Erm, that's how it was in the EU.
Yes, we checked passports but, as everywhere else, it was incredibly lax.
There were even "fast lanes" for EU passports where any form of robust checking was virtually non-existent.

The consequences of the new passport processing & systems have been a bit hidden by Covid, but there won`t be any/many express lanes anymore.

We needed to leave the EU because the majority of voters decided to in answer to a simple question.

We joined the Common Market - that was a good thing, but once that snowball started down the hill it just got bigger and bigger.

Yep, so it is.

We can now make people apply for pre-settled or settled status, it may be a blunt tool but it has benefits.

Prior to that it was far more fluid either through lack of political will or fear of challenge.

Well firstly there was that............. then several court cases and various tactics deployed by the "runners up". Can`t call them losers because everyone "wins" these days.
