1st Test England v Australia - Edgbaston

BBC accused of bias a lot of late .... so why have two Convict commentators ( in a test series, Ashes at that, in England) at the same time on radio 5 live ?

their sneering, condescending comments claiming theyve already won this, and the series, and extolling the (really fcuking questionable) ethics of the sandpaper trio of cheats at any n every chance are really, really, really pissing me off

Convicts pushing their luck .... with that review of a Wilson 'not-out' ... cheating convicts KNEW it was not out too ... fcucking 'gamesmanship, or just plain cheating???

Oh fcuking bollox ... wont hear the last of this from sneery convicts

Edgbaston aint a fortress anymore

Indeed. Let's hope this is the kick up the a**e that the whole English test setup needs. I suspect inertia will win out though, and the same suspects will be given another chance.

It’s easy to plough into how abject that second innings was from England, however let’s be objective.

England had to play pretty much all of that match without Anderson and were always going to be weakened by that.
Batting last on that was always going to be tough (although it shouldn’t have been as tough as that) so the toss had a bearing on things.
Burns hit a great Test match century and got a good ball in the second. He looks steadier now.
Chris Woakes is great – good with the ball and handy with the bat.
England had the foot on the throat of the Aussies on Days 1 and 3. This is a good Australian side but not a great one.

However:
Moeen and Bairstow look done with the bat.
Moeen Ali looks finished with the ball too. A tale of two spinners and Lyon came out on top.
Denly isn’t capable.
Roy is an experiment that looks unlikely to work against Australia .
Root’s captaincy has been terrible.
England allowed the media’s gushing over Smith and Lyon to get to them. Both are human and both can be got out and played effectively with the right mindset.

The ODI side had a philosophy and approach to playing the game but the Test side doesn’t have one. What is their approach? How do they expect to put on runs? No one knows how to dig deep.

A disappointing, but not totally unexpected, end to this Test.

Mo not Test standard anymore and Denly never has been. Both have to be dropped. I don't think we can continue with Bairstow and Buttler. Both really are flat track bullies and struggle when there is something in the pitch for the bowlers. Also, neither are specialist W/K in the longer game. Foakes would have stumped Wade yesterday before he had a score. Roy could play but no higher than 4/5. They will give him another chance.
Archer will play. Woakes record at Lords is top notch. I think he averages about 6/7 per wicket there.
It may be time to give Ballance another chance. Has made 5 tons so far this season. Or perhaps Sam Northeast who is going well.
And Dom Sibley at opener, best average for an English opener this season. Pick players on form, especially batsmen.
I suspect though we won't see many changes!!

Just f*****g caved in.
No one seemed capable of just leaving a wayward delivery.
We needed a blocker/ frustrater like Boycott today.
Old sandpaper Steve now feels vindicated.
Still I suppose you can’t expect a convict to be honest can ya?

Woakes is a good cricketer, but I do worry that he is not completely fit, he only bowled 13 overs in that mammoth Aussie second innings. Whether he was ill, unfit or simply unsuited to the conditions, I don't know. If he has a twinge, learn from the Anderson situation and rest him.
