International News Climate Change 🌍

We are all capitalists like it or not. We have many things our parents never had, we don`t turn them down do we?
Its how society works, we don`t care about the impact on the planet when we are renewing our smartphone or buying our plastic wrapped avocado`s that have traveled halfway round the globe...... non-seasonal/exotic foods have a massive impact across the globe........ remember that next time you are in Waitrose... ;)
If only that had such generic truth.

Climate change has been occuring since the planet came about......The ONLY thing that we can do to help is to stop destroying the rainforests......THATS IT!! apart from that there is nothing we can do about it....................makes me laugh all the governments around the world listening to a 15 year old retard ...........tchhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Define 'retard' (use mirror if that helps) this girl has Aspergic tendencies. This means that she has a genetic predisposition towards certain interpersonal and social situations where reading non vebal cues and Mentalization skills are concerned, a little like BIll Gates (a heads up for the terminally bigoted). Such people can find it difficult to read the intentions meaning and motivation of others, and in extreme cases causes them to post inflammatory and obnoxious posts on forums due to their inability to predict how others might view their comments ( hear any bells yet?)

Your own DSM 5 classification is pending, but under review.
Incidentally, I have been working as a specialist in this field for 43 years so, please, as hard as it may be for you, listen to the grown ups. Of course I will have reported your post as being offensive, 'retarded' and unrepresentative of right minded folk who do not behave abusively towards children. You have the right to feel, offended, marginalised and even persecuted. I have the right to call out the fact the you are a pathological t**t, and am overly clinically qualified to evidence my assertions. My opinion is clinically qualified, yours is just another opinion....

As usual, you go off on a rambling tangent... Whatever

Your point on China's populace is a good one, even if their emissions are similar to ours, the scale of population is much, much larger than ours - a simple step change for them will have a larger impact than the UK can ever achieve on a global basis. But how can you then rise their poor out of poverty? The same for India. Where do the precious metals come from to support an ever increasing world populations non-fossil fuelled power needs??

So while protesting about climate change is nice, it does little to address the reality of the multi economic and societal planet we live on and the challenges we have. I'm all for being a better custodian for this planet and doing more of the basics, I can do without the ongoing shrill hysteria and anti-capitalist politics that in some areas masquerades as schemes and points of view. If you dare to criticise Greta, it's like being on the end of a cults wrath.

We need to be better, but we need to stop patronising people about flights and how many kids they have. It's incredibly patronising

A good read on this is Andrew Mcafee “more from less” or you can listen to him on the Sam Harris podcast “making sense”. Episode 170.

Essentially capitalism combined with advanced technology will mean these countries have a lesser impact than the west did as they pass through their industrial revolution. China is a big problem but actually in their controlled economy they reduced impact of certain pollutants far quicker than the US did

As someone who works in the oil and gas industry it might be worth noting that the oil and gas industry leading UK and global players recognize climate change and the role within which oil plays a part. They’re even lobbying for a carbon tax to facilitate a commercially directed but government facilitated transition to more sustainable energy.

So surprising to see some people on here at odds with even the position of oil companies.

what is really the big question is not whether we need to change. We do. And certainly at my company there is massive genuine ethical focus on it. But more how can we do it quickly if consumers and technology aren’t ready. It’s a really tricky chicken and egg but luckily the shift and momentum is turning after some false starts

we need to still provide ever INCREASING energy demands for a growing world populace and encourage consumers to change their habits. Technology is rapidly evolving and very exciting in terms of how quickly we can transition forecourts to electric charging, carbon capture tech etc. but people need to make sacrifices and invest in it to make it feasible for capitalism to drive the change. We are all responsible.

and whether you like it or not oil and gas companies are some of the very few corporate players with the capital behind them, and the infrastructure to drive the change unless some new entry players can blow the market apart like Facebook and amazon did in the tech revolution

Lazy response, and misses the point (conveniently). Listen to the sentiment because it is us, the adults, who have created and maintained the crises our young people are complaining about, And it is us, the adults who have indulged the 'luxuries' our young people have invested worth and meaning in. It is us, the adults, who have funded this dendancy so don't blame or demonize the young who are asking the questions we have been too complacent to confront. Our children are a product of our our values and principles, look at yourself before criticizing our children and their voices.
How far do you go back to lay this situation on? our parents, our grandparents, the industrial revolution ? before? back to when the wheel was invented?
We have all been victims of evolution and progress, the children of today will become adults and then their children, the cycle will continue, because today's young people have got a platform for their voice and are willing to raise the issue, doesn't mean the adults of today are wrong and they are right, we all have to do something to change the process of today, generations to come could be saying the same thing unless change from everyone happens.
It's not the adults of today who created this situation, it's the evolution of time and mankind of where we are today.

And now we have Lewis Hamilton saying go "Vegan" to save the planet..................

Is there a League table for hypocrisy? I`m sure the F1 circus trundling around the globe doesn`t contribute to the whole issue...............

When a distant ancestor lit the first fire is the moment you could point too, after that it has just grown slowly until most recently (post war) when the population has grown rapidly and the mindset of society thinks "everyone should have the same".

He's allowed an opinion. Vegans tend to be pretty outspoken at the best of times...

As for F1, yeah it does undoubtedly contribute, but you also have to remember that technology developed for F1 has a habit of finding its way back to consumer cars and making them more efficient.

If you are looking at sports and their impact with carbon emissions, there is a sport in this country which regularly has around 2 million people a week moving around the country every weekend, that can't help either...

Misses the point for me.

We shouldn't be looking for some historical blame, we should be concentrating on the present and looking for solutions.
Exactly.

I was answering a question, I also said it's a collective responsibility of us all to make things happen, as this conversation could be going on for decades.

I’m not a vegan even though I eventually aspire to be.

Consumption of meat is the single greatest threat to our climate but how are you supposed to change a whole planets diet?
It’s almost a ridiculous suggestion but if everyone stopped eating meat by the end of the year we’d be in a lot healthier position.

Levels of human consumption in total and the throwaway nature of products/fashion etc is the greatest threat. Also some plants are massively impacting the climate/environment such as Avocados.

Perhaps this is the sort of thread where if people are going to make arguments they should support them with links to the associated facts so people are more easily able to connect and trust with their position

Well it hasn't happened so far on the Brexit thread, so don't hold your breath...

Touches on the emissions levels for meat & milk productions.

Doesn’t speak much about the fact the amount of land we’re cutting through just to grow the feed for cows in the first place is having a huge impact & then the transport & logistics emissions added onto that.

Also this link took a 2 second google - https://www.cowspiracy.com/facts

If this is for real, methinks XR wont come off best .... Cardiff V Millwall? have they thought this through???

There are too many people on the planet consuming too much stuff.

Nature will respond, irrespective of what we do.
The planet heats up, we die, the planet cools and the cycle starts again...... we will be the dinosaurs of the distant future................. :)

Another prong to the WEF’s plan to reset the planet. It’s all on their website. First it was COVID, now it’s the climate, next it will be a cyber crisis..
