Current Player #25 Oisin Smyth

Balmer (sp?) had a 'mare for the short time I watched. Got caught with the ball for the 3rd goal and lost his man in the build up for the 4th.
Will watch the 2nd half later.
Balmers 21 and there’s going to be mistakes, but there’s without doubt something there to work with.
Steven Gerrard once m/ucked up against Chelsea? And was on maybe 99k/week more than Balmers currently on

Absolutely. Just suggesting Smyth didn't have much impact on those.

Spain obviously a far superior team, and no disgrace losing to a young team from such a solid footballing nation.

Must admit after being involved in the senior get together the other week, for his old Dungannon 18 year old team mate to be picked in midfield, will hurt.

The commentators reckoned it was down to match fitness but hopefully he uses it as a motivation to develop.

Just watched the The 90 minutes ,
Have to say what a good side Spain are.
Balmer and McClennand up against Ruiz And Rodri. Two players who have played nearly 50 games in La liga this season.
On the whole both done pretty well against a side who over ran, overloaded and picked off the Irish wing backs.
Something we need to learn from.
Good game for Karl to watch. he mentioned Liverpool and Man City the other day.
He should have a look at this Spanish sides shape, work rate and system of play,
He’s a good coach, then spin it around and work how not to leave the full/wing backs exposed as the last couple of season

couple of decent clearances in 2nd half from Smyth .... diving header around 75 mins , and an old fashioned 'when in doubt....' late on

NI had more than enough chances to increase their lead- including hitting the post..... then conceded 6 mins into time added to draw 1-1

i watched the first half, and he looked good. Was the only NI player not to make a mistake or misplace a pass. Looked calm and composed on the ball, and put some nice threaded through balls to the strikers and midfield to create chances. Admittedly not against decent opposition, but looked good.

We can still organise loans with NL sides which may be something we could do. It’s a bit of an low bar for someone so rated (up until KR decided he wasn’t his player or some such) when a League 2 side or fellow League 1 could have had him.

Is there an argument for him to be the right sided centre back in a three permanently, if we adopt that formation?

Forgetting his goal, which presumably won’t be a regular occurrence (!) some of his long passing was absolutely sublime. Not sure I’ve seen passes like that from an Oxford defender for a long time. With a little more confidence as well you have to assume that he’d be able to start dribbling the ball out from the back a bit more, given his midfield credentials.

Having a decent young player as the right sided CB in a three, Long as his backup, with Moore in the middle (Negru backup) and Brown on the left (with Thorniley backing him up) is a very solid defence with superb cover. It also allows Leigh and Stevens to presumably thrive as attacking fullbacks. Throw Bennett in as top quality backup and we only need a second RWB to suddenly have stacked looking defensive options, which is nice!
