Should be our toughest test of recent times this evening if the form table is to be believed

Did Long really do that much wrong? Thought he had a few decent touches and got involved, was unlucky to be challenging on what was a wickedly whipped cross their striker would have likely put in anyway, then got an awful head injury.

To say he was the reason we lost tonight seems a little bit of a stretch to me.

RR is starting to really irritate me now. Flashes of brilliance mixed with long periods of mediocrity and carelessness, and he seems to be booked for dissent virtually every game
Give me a battler any time ,over a fancy Dan....

He is not the same player under Des as he was under Snake and Short, sorry to say. Doesn't really seem to know what his role is and you can see his frustration.

He's not been the same since he was hoping his old Notts County manager ,was going to get the Oxford job..

Tonight was just typical Oxford, exactly what we’ve come to expect for the last 5-6 years at least. A cold, wet and windy night, middle of winter and we just don’t have the personnel in the squad or the coaching or the guts to play a physical team who can mix it up and play that different brand of football with a different set up and system that the time of year and the conditions demand.

We set up the same as usual more or less, and we’re out battled, and out thought by and large by a team who looked good and more threatening when they had conditions in their favour first half, and had the size and physicality and the dark arts to frustrate and manage the game when it was needed 2nd half.

The Kassam stadium on nights like tonight really is a hellscape.

Rubbish game. Absolutely no idea what we were trying to do most of the time. Didn't even try to play the conditions or percentages. Summed up by a moment in the second half where two Barnsley lads went in full throttle to beat each other to a high ball assuming they were competing against an Oxford player - they weren't, we were busy getting into position to rebuild from the back. Or something. Cam was good. Marcus McGuane is a really good player but diabolical tonight - slowed everything down and constantly in the wrong position. Pretty much everyone else did some good but pointless things occasionally.

Oh well, still in a good position all things considered. God I hate that stadium

Maybe for part of it, but we were a brilliant Cumming save away from possible capitulation.
As someone who was at that game, Carlisle were awful and even with being on top for half an hour didn’t look like scoring. Des got the tactics spot on that game.

As for tonight, I would maybe have brought Bruery on at half time but the conditions played a massive part. I personally think we will get 7 points from the next 3 games.

Look at Derby tonight losing to Reading, everyone in the top 6 will drop points.

Sides know that if they press us when we have the ball, and keep the ball in the air a fair bit, then we can't play our game, and can just be picked off when the opportunity comes. The better sides can do this, and we have no answer.

Not really the attitude though, is it. Players shouldn’t be credited for doing nothing wrong, they should be credited for doing things right and being notably effective in the game. It’s not unreasonable to think all XI players can do that at once either. Manning was really making ground in this respect, hardly any passengers to a man by the time he left and we’ve seen it in flashes under Des but consistency is lacking.

I try not to be too critical, and I haven’t read any other posts, but I have to say it - we were utter dog shite tonight. I know the conditions were bad but it was the same for both teams. I was really expecting us to go for it and take the game to Barnsley in the second half with the wind behind us but we spent the first 20 minutes of it tapping the ball around at the back. So frustrating… It was men against boys on and off the pitch. No urgency, no tempo, the players don’t seem to know what they are supposed to be doing. There’s no structure, decent players are being made to look really poor. I was surprised at how poor Burey looked. Tyler Goodrham was just outmuscled although he kept trying and showed flashes of what he can do. McGuane was non-existent and Rodrigues just cut a frustrated - and frustrating- figure. Harris was outnumbered up front with no real support. Greg Leigh, with the wind behind us, should have been a key attacking player but he just stayed at left back and didnt really contribute much… The ‘x factor’ is just missing.

Really frustrated tonight.

Well said. My thoughts exactly.

I don’t recall a more lacklustre first 70 minutes at home all season. This is off the back of 10 days off, too!

Buckingham has stated that Long starting was pre-meditated and pre-determined before Saturdays postponement. If that is the case, based upon who Barnsley have upfront (Cole & Cosgrove), then it can go down as nothing other than naivety. On what planet, did he think Long would be sharp enough to come into a back 3 and marshall either of them effectively? Long certainly didn’t.

Elliot Moore and Brown were both way off the pace. I’ve not seen Elliot Moore miss more headers and Brown misplace more passes all season.

Brannagan was head and shoulders above every other player in yellow.

People are communicating that the conditions made it a lottery. If that is the case, we didn’t buy the right ticket, as our in game management was not up to the standard of Barnsley’s.

For the first time, I’m finding myself really question if this squad has what it takes to get into the play offs this season. Since Des came in, we’ve taken 1 point from 12 against those in the top 6. It’s not knee jerk or reactionary to say that a return like that, is not going to be sufficient to secure a play off place.

We’ve a soft under belly in midfield and in the CF area. We are too easy to dominate when playing the stronger sides in this league and have been for some time. That isn’t a ‘Desism’ but he needs to address it to get us more bite in the middle.

The next 10 days are huge. 6 points are an absolute minimum requirement.

Final word for the crowd. Fair play if you were one of the other 6400 or so home fans that bothered tonight 👍🏼. Shame the atmosphere was absolutely garbage.

He definitely wasn't the reason we lost but despite time apart, Stevens and him still looked poor together. The amount of time and space they gave that number 7 in the first half was criminal. He lacked pace but had a sweet left foot and they decided to just leave him free time and time again.

I think you are slightly underplaying the impact of the abysmal weather. That said, once again we appear lightweight.
