If we went for a younger option for a striker we could do worse than look at Jude Soonsup Bell or Jamie Donley at spurs. Both started the reserve season well & are very highly rated.

Thing is we already have loads of youthful players at the top of the pitch.

Harris 24
Mills 19
Perkins 19
O'Donkor 18
Goodrham 20
Woltman 20
Rodrigues 26
Browne 25

Bodin aged 31 is the only exception (haven't added Murphy as I believe he is off). I think it would be a smart move to sign Marriott for not only experience on the pitch but around the building.

And this is why we should keep Henry. Having a top senior pro in training and the dressing room is important for these youngsters. I don’t think Henry will play much at all but definitely he adds value to those that are playing. Our recruitment has been great but we do have a lot of young inexperienced forwards

It’s why we were right to keep Bodin, and right to look to sign an experienced pro like Marriott. But let’s not forget that Eastwood, Brannagan, Moore, Long, Brown, Leigh, Thorniley and Browne are not children and should know how to lead by example. If we really do need more experience, it’s normal to find people who can still play decent minutes.

The idea that we should spend a decent chunk of playing budget on people who aren’t expected to play much is pretty unique to YF.

And speaking of the peccadilloes of this place, wanting to move Henry on if he isn’t going to play doesn’t mean I’m spitting on the memory of anything positive he’s done for the club, but it is annoying to have to point that out.

We already have Baldock around the building who will never kick a ball again. Henry is now 34 and will find it difficult to find a club next season if he isn't going to be playing this season.

I would see it more about having players who can rotate across the front three. Marriott, Harris, Perkins, Browne, Mills, Goodrham, Murphy, O'Donkor and maybe one more sharing three starting positions and likely three places off the bench.

With ball in play being so much longer, games going on for 100+ minutes, and the likely increases in yellow cards its only going to make rotation more important. Plus Manning looks like he will be looking to adapt the team based on the opposition.

So there are opportunities for all to get lots of minutes and keep competition strong.
Very good point 👍

If we get another forward in O Donkor going out on loan is the sensible decision, with just Harris here he was only getting cameo appearances to help kill the game off, only so much you can learn from that, with one centre forward in and perhaps another to come he will get very little game time, a non league loan where he gets plenty of minutes will be best for him and us if he develops, didn’t do Shandon Baptiste any harm.

James Henry’s decision to make if he wants to be here or not, will depend on what he wants to do after this season I should think. If he wants to carry on playing next season then a drop down a level and get some games in will be best for him, if he wants to retire from playing and move into coaching then I reckon he will be happy to stay here for the season.

We won’t get much of his wages paid if he goes out on loan anyway, on the other hand he is not going to play even if he does get fit so I suppose any saving is better than nothing.

Football is absolutely all about sentiment for fans, otherwise you’re just watching a load of overpaid big kids running about in their PE kit.
Your response fails to understand my statement
We all have sentiment in our club hence the passion we show while supporting them
However we should not let it blinker key decisions such as those on players futures.
In his prime he was a key player for us, now unfortunately not so simple as.

Do you expect a level of respect from departing players though?

Take the way COD left the club, that left a sour taste with many. Maybe he just thought that Oxford had been a key part of his development, but then unfortunately it was beneath him.

Football fans expect loyalty and respect from players, but are then able to draw the line where that stops when the situation is reversed?

I'd be happy for Henry to be kept in the squad, but if not I hope we give him the send off that he deserves rather then just a cursory flick of the hand because he's not as good now as he once was.

I think all Oxford fans would love to give Henry a cameo in a game and a standing ovation but I don't think it was great business keeping him for as long as we have. The last 2 years have been avery expensive project. However those days seem to be coming to an end and it's time to move on . It's a space in the team that can be filled by another player. But great memories from him.

Everyone who is pulling a wage at the club needs to impacting the club positively...or you can forget top 30.

I agree there is no room for sentiment but there is plenty of room for care and empathy for the players who are leaving the club. It tends to look really good for those who are wondering whether they want to join us or not.

The sentiment aspect isn't about clinging on to Henry when he's unlikely to play for the team. (That is probably good neither for him nor for us.) It's about respecting what he achieved here - prime contender for best player of the post-Appleton era - and being sad to see him go even if we feel it's time. (And if he wants to stay and fight for his place, we certainly shouldn't begrudge him that opportunity either.) It's the "can I be first to boot him out the door" attitude that I object to.

Im amazed Scotchers that you of all people would like to see Gats go out. He needs to develop right here, who has gone out on loan and come back and pushed on? I dont recall anyone. Gats has shown quite enough already to be given a chance here . I would far rather have him than some supposedly big name older striker like marriot.
Tyler Goodhram - excellent loan spell at Hayes and Yeading, he’s come back and pushed on.

I guess from my perspective, I don’t really see that attitude as prevalent even amongst the postings talking about how Henry would ideally be moved on and that does make it seem like people are being a bit sensitive. I’d also expect the “thanks for the memories” bit to come when it looks a bit more likely that he’s heading off, right now the conversation still seems to be at the stage of whether fans want to see him kept on or not.

If we get another forward in then yes there definitely is a case for G’OD going out on loan, possibly to a National League side where l believe a loan recall is permitted?

However he really should have gone out on loan last season, for his and the club’s benefit. It was awful recruitment and poor mismanagement of one of our young players that this didn’t happen.

He’s potentially a year behind in his development because of last season’s on and off field shambles.
