Transfer News Summer 2023 Transfer Window Thread

I respect your view but don‘t share it. There are countless examples of managers turning it around in no time. The league is undoubtedly it‘s weakest for a few seasons, the budget is healthy, the manager arrived in March so he‘s had time to acclimatise, backroom team in place, the recruitment looks decent even if frustratingly slow in key positions and there’s a feel good factor with everyone on side for the first time in a few seasons. It’s all there - mid table will be a poor and unacceptable return.
I'm not really sure how anyone can see last season, and particularly since Manning's arrival in March, as building for this season. It was all hands to the pumps and survival at all costs.
This transfer window has so far been a case of trying to build something from the wreckage that was last season. Think we're at the foundation stage, but looking a little more promising that last season, which ended up resembling the poor old Crooked House!

I’ve been told today that Coventry might also be in for Brannagan but can’t see anything alluding to it online?

One of the best footballing centre-halves we have had. It is a good list Sarge, but I would have to add Keith Cassells to it.

Great list Sarge, I add in Mal Shotton, Chicken George, and the legendary Roy Burton. Plus the never to be forgotten Peter Houseman.

Some fantastic names on that list though and a number of others that could easily be added.
Roy Burton - what a fantastic reflex goalkeeper he was. Malcolm Shotton, I have to agree. George Lawrence, not so sure, but he did P**s Robert Maxwell off, so that gives him extra points. Peter Houseman, don't think we saw the best of him to be honest. What happened to him, his wife and friends was tragic, six young orphans in one night due to some selfish, lunatic driver.

Just noticed from Football Insider that several clubs looking at Gorrin!

Godden scored for Coventry today, if anyone still wasn’t convinced that we had no chance with him.

He didn’t inherit a total s**t show anyway, he inherited plenty of decent players, and all managers inherit some players they don’t want or who have injury problems . He’s signed eight so can’t complain he’s had nothing to work with.

Our record before today was something like 12 wins in 50 plus games, I don’t think he inherited that many good players.

For me:
Joey Beauchamp
Micky Lewis
Les Robinson
Matt Elliott
Ray Houghton
Chrissy Allen
Dean Saunders
Garry Briggs
John Aldridge
John Byrne
Paul Moody
John Durnin
Phil Whitehead
Jim Magilton
Trevor Hebbard
Neil Slatter
Danny Hylton
John Lundstrum
James Henry
Rob Dickie
The legend James Constable?

The legend James Constable?
Obviously, just forgot about him, amongst others, like Paul Simpson for example, a great free kick taker, and a winger I loved watching bombing down the wing, I seem to remember he had yellow soles on his boots, which I always liked, as I remember thinking that was what the full backs would've seen as he ran away from them!

I was also a massive fan of David Smith, a real unsung hero of our 95/96 promotion side, a neat and tidy passer, who tackled and broke up play very well and always kept things ticking over superbly. Poor guy barely gets a mention, but he was a virtual ever present in that side.

The legend James Constable?
Constable is actually second for me behind Joey, and I've been watching since 1994.

I think it's easy to underestimate how many absolutely critical goals he scored and who he scored them against, how he literally dragged this club up by it's bootlaces, how he cared hugely (and still hugely cares) and, he literally turned down a quadruple your money offer at Swindon. Didn't even speak to them. He was in tears when he left us.

There were more talented players yes. There were those who went on to greater things. But in terms of players who changed the course of Oxford United, who rubbed our main rivals noses in it at the expense of their own bank balance, I actually don't think Beano is regarded as enough of a legend.

Beautifully put and an absolute legend imho, he raised the bar when we needed it most, I will never forget that and told Mr Wilder that too, he smiled and nodded his head, he knew.

The best/worst piece of business we could do this summer is what we are currently crying out for, a defensive midfielder, Gorrin?

Other clubs are now sniffing around, but surely if a contract could be agreed on appearances and for a year, its not rocket science surely?
Is he not settled in the area, and would prefer not to have to move?

I would agree with this - James Constable is a legend. You have players to fit generally whatever level you play at but you won't get someone as committed and passionate about OUFC as Beano. We probably wouldn't be where we are now without that Conference promotion
