last season, this season, next season….. I’ll be like a 5 year old needing a wee but to excited to actually go. Optimism is the lifeblood of football and I got it wrong last year. I’ll no doubt get it wrong this year and next.

If it were down to my predictions over the last 5 pre seasons we’d be world club, European, premiership champions and fa cup & league cup winners…

My prediction this year is the same as last year.

We are going up as champions with 100 points plus.

Feel free to pin that and lambast me if I’m wrong.
You speak for us all 😁👍

A couple of things that also struck me, was that Brannagan looked back to his best and enjoying himself ( which could make a huge difference) and Thorniley's presence seemed to make a big difference to all the the defenders. He is far calmer than Findlay and much more composed on the ball.
Agreed. Importantly, you could see exactly what Manning is trying to achieve, having seemingly recruited players to that end.

I'm not getting carried away by the result but I liked the way things were set-up with no square pegs in round holes and trying to make the best of the likes of Brannagan and Browne.

And I for one still haven’t forgiven you. I remember eating my cheese and pickle sandwiches in the toilets and crying a little as i did because of your stubborn naivety. The moist cheese did NOT taste good.

If we lift the trophy this season, I’d like you to think about my moist cheese sandwiches in the toilet as we do
Toilets and moist cheese ….. whatever floats your boat.

I am far less interested in whether we won our pre-season than in how we played in them. I am impressed so far with a number of things. The high, aggressive press looks good, and the options that we have once we’ve won the ball back is important, especially from wide players. I think we’ll create a lot of chances from turnover in the opponent’s half this year. The organisation in the middle of the pitch and defensively looks good too, as does our distribution out from the back.

So plenty to be optimistic about without whacking out ones hampton and furiously beating it.
Toilets, moist cheese now we have people banging their Hampton…. Am I on some odd dating site? 😱

👍^^^yeah, Im a fan, no room for caution.
I spend all week being considered and professional, I want all the highs and lows and to be entertained by this beautiful game, by this wonderful club. That was my biggest gripe over the last season or so... So boring.
Entertain me and you get all my £££. Simple.
Before last season we had three fabulously entertaining seasons, you can't complain about that or the quality of the football. Hopefully we can get back to that level while also being more consistent against the more basic sides.

I remember that Steve Biggins once excused himself from missing a sitter because one of his contact lenses had fallen out.

I can understand that. Had to boot the ball out when a contact lens popped out mid game but ended up going for a corner rather than a throw in which I was aiming for! The Ref did a great job stopping the game and told everybody to stay still when he realised what had happened. Fortunately found the lens about 6 or 7 feet away, washed it and put it back in. The Ref then started the game again.

The season we got promoted from the conference (I think) Newcastle lost 6-1 to Stevenage in a pre season friendly and then went onto win the championship, so you do have to take pre season with a pinch of salt.

Saying that, overall we look to be in a much healthier position than this time last year, players in, the team fit, healthy and organised and a manager who is focused, which is all a big improvement on last season when we were imploding.

It’s obviously a low bar comparison, we were shocking last season and could of had no complaints had we gone down, I wouldn’t exactly be shocked if we ended up mid table given the mess that has had to be cleared up and some of the highly paid players that we have and are still stuck with but significant progress has been made in a short window.

Cautious optimism is the right mindset at the moment.

Agreed.

It isn't the results that have encouraged me albeit the QPR game was very enjoyable to watch. What has encouraged me is the team patterns, work rates, the interchangeability between players and working to hold shape. Put simply, the team looks organised and appears to know what they are supposed to be doing.

Exactly. Compare that to how it felt at the same stage last pre-season. I think any optimism for the season ahead then was based on hope and not a lot else.

This looks and feels light years ahead of that...and I can't wait for the season proper to kick off....bring it on!

I was in SSL near the dugout for QPR. The calmness from our coaching staff was noticeable. Also that Manning and Hogg seem to operate as a genuine partnership. Only a detail but during a break in play mid way through the first half Moore and Thornily approached the bench themselves and asked for a word with Chris Hogg. They obviously had some questions and wanted input from him. All very different to the old days when coach and player communication was an earful from the sidelines then a blokey hug at the end if things panned out. Don't know if this will survive the pressures of real league football but the whole culture feels much more adult and respectful.

Heard Stoke have bid £8m for Luke McNally.

We could be in for a little cash boost. That may open different doors ie Left Back and Striker.
Anyone know what the sell on clause was in terms of fee or profit? As well as the %?

Anyone know the sell on we have? Guess it might be about £640k based on the below.

Sold for £1.6m
Burnley sell for £8m
Difference is £6.4m
10% est. sell on
10% of £6.4m is £640k

Sound about right?

That's obviously their style. I was about three rows behind the dugout at FGR. That was a huge pressure game, and they were exactly the same. LM was quite vocal, but it was very specific - you could hear him telling players to make slight adjustments to their positioning etc. And they were obviously listening. My FGR mate was in the same seat the previous season under KR. Said it was a 90 minute barrage of swearing and shouting. I've been very impressed with LM so far. He's pretty hard nosed, but seems consistently polite and professional.
