What’s happening with that Arsenal kid who was at chesterfield last year? Seems to have gone a bit quiet

The current ‘midfield five’:

McGuane Brannagan
McEachran Smyth

Murphy Rodriguez Browne
Goodrham Bodin Wildschut
Henry
Eleven players competing for five spots already as it stands, a good number of which are on serious money. And that’s without including the kid Johnson, or the potential of Gorrin getting a short term deal.

Anyone who thinks we still need a couple of wingers, and maybe even another central midfielder, isn’t going to get them without people moving on. We won’t carry 13/14 players for five spots unless we’re willing to sacrifice depth and cover pretty much everywhere else, which would mean yet more shoddy and unbalanced squad building. I can’t see that being allowed, nor do I think Manning is that daft.

If Murphy and Yanic are ‘offering something’ this season, it will be because we didn’t sign anybody else, and if we do sign others then they likely won’t be offering anything at all, because they won’t be on the pitch. Although unless they move on, they will be costing an absolute fortune and taking budget away that is needed to strengthen other areas.

People can’t have it both ways.

I think this is why we should have slightly tempered expectations of what can be achieved this year. Manning’s business has so far on paper looked very good, and it’s pleasing that we seem to be getting players on long term deals (so they’ll still be here next year). But he is going to be handicapped in terms of recruitment by the haphazardly assembled squad of last year, and I don’t think it will be exactly the kind of squad that Manning would ideally want.

I’m less down on YW and Murphy than some - I think they showed enough in flashes last year to suggest that, with a proper pre season and a proper coach and team, they could be assets to the squad going forward. But I do feel like the likes of Bodin and Henry may have run their race for OUFC, particularly with the type of football Manning seems to want to play.

Heard from a couple of people that Joseph for between 250-300k is a possibility.
I'm sure they're wrong seeing as we were knocked back six months ago offering three times as much, and that was before his form picked up.

'If' and 'could be' are once again doing some heavy lifting for certain posters over the summer months.

I like the general calibre of signings we're making now because there is no 'if' or 'maybe' or 'perhaps' with Rodrigues or Thorniley - they're known trusted quantities ready and raring to go.

Always a red flag when the 'ifs' start filling the threads, whether it's players we've had for 12 months or completely new entities like Burey.

Last summer was littered with 'ifs' and how many came through?

"If we wait until later in the window"
"If we can get a tune out of Murphy"
"If Wildschut can get back to his Wigan form"
"If Gorrin can get fit"
"If we can get 20 games out of Baldock"
"If we sign a full-back"
"If McGuane can be made into a CDM"
"If Djavan Anderson can play RB"
"If Jodi Jones can rediscover his Cov form"
"If Jerome Sinclair gives up the chicken shop"

Out with the If's. In with the Sure Things.
It was the "ifs" and "wait there's plenty of time brigade," that got kr off the hook last season and did for our season.

So when was the last time a full squad was assembled before the start of pre-season (bearing in mind they are back now and and most contracts aren't up until 1st July)?

Maybe if you could give an example of a time when a manager "got it right" and how that translated to successful campaign, following such early recruitment, we would at least have an idea of what you consider to be the standard Manning needs to achieve, in your opinion.

Otherwise it just sounds like pointless, negative whining with no real idea what successful recruitment looks like 🤷‍♂️

Are we passed the ‘low hanging fruit’ stage of the window? Feels like the whole thing (and not just for us) has slowed right down.

Players still hold a lot of cards at this stage. Guess that changes the closer we get to the start of the season.
We have to keep the momentum up, as we have more to do than most teams in terms of squad building.
