Yanic Wildschut was a good L1 player because of his explosive pace. That’s gone. It doesn’t matter how you dress it up, he can be the fittest he’s ever been but he isn’t getting that back. He’s a pretty poor footballer, and without his pace he’s not up to it. Obviously the contracts are biting us on the a**e when we are paying a Top L1 wage (and a fee) got a guy whose lost the one attribute that made him worth it
By my reckoning he has played 88 games in the Championship going for £millions.
I am not sure that the only attribute is pace and that 'he is a pretty poor footballer'.
He has to have some attributes to play so many Championship games. If he is fit and can get some confidence, who knows?

He is good at league 1 level iam sure we will see a decent player under Mannings management.

I don’t think he can be classed as a ‘poor footballer’ but you can see by the way he plays that his game is about getting the defender to commit and going on the outside. For that you need pace and whether he’s still got that explosiveness, to the level required, is questionable.

I'd be surprised if we got three strikers.

Agree that we need at least two.

If it’s just two then they need to be like for like. We need to have some serious competition in that area. Taylor could go on some real barren runs - 8 or 9 games at a time - yet was always picked. I think in some positions you accept that the cover might not be as good but up front there has to be some proper back up.

If we were to let Gatlin go out on loan, and SB is not to play again, then technically we currently have no proper strikers. If we only signed two and one got injured early doors then we are really up the creek again.

So either Gatlin stays with us, SB is ready to play (no chance), or we need to bring in 3 (including a loan maybe), I’d say that’s being sensible and having proper cover?

Fwiw, I saw someone on Twitter say that Findlay has worn the 35 shirt at some previous clubs, so it may well be his next choice of number with Thorniley having taken 4.
Not necessarily the outright indication that he's sat in the departure lounge.

I think a lot depends on the plan for Golding as to how available Findlay may be. Sam Long can of course play at centre-back as well. I'd say you'd want a more 'senior' centre-back option in addition to Negru beyond what you'd imagine is the first choice pairing of Thorniley and Moore.

Moore, Thorniley, Findlay, Negru, Golding (Long)

There are plenty of examples of players who were much, much less effective once they’d lost their pace. It doesn’t mean they’re now terrible, but they’re nowhere near as good, because their whole way of playing and style was based around being quicker than others.

I still think YW could be much more effective as a League One central striker; a big, strong target man who can hold the ball up and play others in, rather than desperately hanging on to being a winger even though his pace has dulled. But maybe I’m just going on that one game he played there against Ipswich where he looked far better than he has on any other occasion for us.

I'm not sure about these contracts biting us on the a**e to be honest. We still have plenty of spaces in the squad to fill so it's not as if they're going to prevent us bringing players in, and their wages are budgeted for.

We can still bring in 5 established players, a couple of younger loanees and a couple of development players which will give us a real balance across the squad.

And that's before seeing what Wildschut and Murphy are about this season. It was only a handful of games, but Murphy looked top drawer under Manning. If he continues that form his wages will look cheap. Wildschut too has the opportunity to be a real player at this level but we've never seen him fully fit yet. He looks in good shape so deserves a chance to prove himself if nothing else.

Your defence of the previous manager is unbelievable. You honestly think some of those players are worth what they were given. Stop the world I want to get off.

Imagine we weren't pissing away 15-20 grand a week on players who might get used if they're vastly improved or we're desperate.

Imagine Manning could use that to have players we need / could generate revenue for the club.

These stupid contracts have ripped a leg off us, never mind biting us in the arse.

According to Transfermarkt, he wore it for Celtic U20s nearly 10 years ago and has not worn it since. I still don't think it's a good sign for his future here.

I do feel we are not looking into the best free transfers from teams, we should be looking not just uk

I didn't say that the contracts were right, or the Robinson was right to give them. Believe it or not, not everything is about our previous manager!!

I'm talking about the here and now. And if Murphy produces the form that he did in the last few games of last season over the next year then his wages will be an absolute steal. Wildschut is harder to judge because he had an horrific injury and was never fully fit. If he stays and is fully match fit then he could still be a real asset.

True. At his peak YW offered a combination of decent technique with lots of pace and brute strength - relatively hard to come by in a wide player in the lower leagues. If the pace has gone we're left with a competent and experienced bruiser. Could be a role closing out games or if we're getting bullied out wide I suppose but hard to see him working as a central striker in a Manning team tbh. Let's see, I suppose he could have worked himself back into shape (at age 32). Given how quickly Manning abandoned him at the end of last season he was either unfit or 'legs have gone'. Strongly suspect the latter tbh. Shame because he's always struck me as a commited and passionate pro. Why we signed him is a question only our former glorious leader can answer, his profile never really made sense.

Yeah, I can absolutely see the argument for it, I'm just not sure we'll end up signing three new strikers.

Totally agree, and SE you’re just glossing over the cracks no matter how you put it. The previous 18 months transfer windows damaged us and nearly cost us our league one status, but onwards & upwards (hopefully) as they say (whoever they are)
