Perhaps if transfers should be carried out in Latin and scribed on vellum we could attract a different type of player

If the consensus is that we need to go back to young players with potential to generate profit but that can improve us in the here and now then I don't know how Bate can't be in the conversation. Once he found his rhythm he was head and shoulders above our other players, including a club legend in his position. My opinion of him is very high - I thought he was one of the best footballers I saw in L1 last season in his pomp. The injury curtailed what was a brilliant run of form and had he been able to finish the season that way, Leeds may be more reluctant to shift him.

As with any view I have on a player I do it with money as no object as I don’t know the budget or how far it will go. Common sense in all cases is that if any player soaks up the entirety of the budget or hampers us from wider improvements then forget it. But budget permitting, he’s a player I’d have back without a second thought, personally. And just to provoke an unpopular thought, should Brannagan move on or we get a good offer whereby we can remove a large wage burden, who better to step straight in than Lewis Bate. I’d rather have them all competing for the midfield slots but I’d be much more comfortable if Brannagan left with Bate already in the building.

There are other alternatives. The like of Archie Collins at Exeter is one I really hope we’re looking at. Dylan Levitt is another good shout. But just a general point I thought I’d make - Bate fits ‘the model’ in almost every way and fits nicely in the mould of being promotion standard now with large resale potential but equally, in the event we did go up, he’d make the jump to the championship with us. Anyone we can find in that space is exactly what we should be going for.

I don't recall; did Bate's injury ocurr before Manning arrived?

I agree that Bate is a very good player.
But the issue is the balance in the midfield. McGuane, Brannagan and Bate are all good players, but when did they click as a 3?
That is why, I suspect, people want to see something different from Bate.

I have to say - that is a really weird comparison!
There's probably 50 Premier League loanees playing in League One any given season - no need to go back 20-odd years! Plus, that deal was really just Harry Redknapp doing his old club a favour (though I was on the London Road on Boxing Day that season, so I do remember how sensational Defoe was that day)

My logic is simple - Tyler would learn more the higher in the pyramid we can loan him. The better the competition, the better the lesson. He's already shown that he won't embarrass himself at League One level. So if you decide to loan him out - why would you drop him all the way to the conference, when you surely don't have to?
Defoe was simply an example that came to mind, and how well he played for Bournemouth against us in one game there.

At last, a Yellows Forum topic which is firmly in my wheelhouse! Excellent post, with one exception - Plato and Aristotle, yes; Cicero, no. He, like other Romans in the 1st century BC, would turn up their noses at the idea of transposing a zeta as a z. It wasn’t until the 3rd century AD that the Greek became the Latin verbalising suffix -ize. The basic rule is: -ize for words with Greek roots, but -ise for words with Latin or French ones, e.g. Karl Robinson theorized that a fully fit Josh Murphy would terrorise League One defences.

Good to see Paul Cannell's grandson on the forum.

Best performance I’ve ever seen against Us, he was unplayable that day.
I'm going to mention two other brilliant performances in home games that stick in my mind - Georgi Kinkladze for Man City in the late 90s being the first. He strolled around exuding class, skill and vision and when the game finished, looked like he'd been for a stroll in the park.

The second was Aaron McLean for Grays in the Conference - the pace, skill and work-rate were exceptional and we knew we were watching someone who should be playing at a higher level. I wasn't the only home fan who warmly applauded when he was substituted near the end of a 1-1 draw .

It happened in the Derby game, after he'd arrived but before he was managing the team. (I think Henry was injured in the same game?)

Yep, McLean tore us a new one. Standing ovation I recall.

I remember Paul Gascoigne against us in an FA Cup tie against Spurs. We played pretty well (Martin Foyle scored a couple, I think) but he basically destroyed us on his own.
I was there, great day out, just a shame one person had to spoil it, but he was bloody good.

Who's the club legend?

I honestly feel that if we get a proper defensive midfielder 'into the building' (as they say!) then a number of our problems will be solved at a stroke - Cam and McGuane will then have license to roam forward and help create chances and be more of an attacking threat than they were last season as they both had to fulfil all the various midfield roles, whoever plays wide might have finally some targets either in the box or arriving in to the box now and whoever plays up front may now have some support and hopefully be able to link things up or hold the ball up.....sounds so simple!

Am really looking forward to seeing what calibre of player we can attract now, and also hoping Manning can create (finally!) a balanced squad full of options with proper back up!

Hmm. That sounds a bit KRish. Players falling for that would be about 2000 years old!

I think that Kinkladze's performance was the best I ever saw against us at the Manor.
Stan Collymore was fantastic against us for Southend once (by miles the best player on the pitch)
Oh and a Paul Gascoigne wasn't bad at White Hart Lane ( we lost 4 2)
