Sam Smith

If you add in a committed Eastwood behind a solid defence, a fit Nelson, a fit Hall, a fit and playing to his strengths Obika, some new young players out to prove their worth ( Whyte & Brown), a better management team, a bigger general pool of players and U23 side to keep them match fit and push the senior squad, and still some of the best additions to the squad to come in, yep what’s not to like.
OK spill the beans. 'Still some if the best additions to the squad to come in' Really? Hope you are right

losing to up and coming and highly regarded midfielders to Blackburn and Preston.

We turned them into the highly regarded midfielders they are. I'm pretty sure when lego and Rothwell signed it was their intention to use oxford as a stepping stone for their career and it worked out really well for them and for us. We got a promotion and a good season out of them (we will forget last season). This happens to all clubs at every level. Also I'm not sure carruthers is a step down from Rothwell albeit he is only on loan.

I hope so Sir. IMO Lego and Rothwell, are, at the start of their careers, want to prove themselves etc...Will Samir etc...have the same attitude? I truly hope so. I appreciate it was only a pre-season game vs MK Dons, but IMO he didnt impress me, but what do I know.

Football is always about opinions, as for the 2 you mentioned, we were lucky to keep hold of Lego after Xmas as his head had been turned, Rothwell on paper can be an excellent player but you have to keep him off the treatment table so he can prove his worth.
KR is going down a different route in the midfield and will build what he thinks can get us out of this division, IMO neither of the above could hold a midfield together themselves but could slot into an already accomplished midfield unit somewhere else.

It strikes me as bizarre how so many people seem to disregard geography.

How many of us living around Oxford would be happy to uproot and go to Plymouth or Liverpool - without a lot of thought. Or wouldn't want to come back to Oxford if we had had to move away?

And if your home town and ties are in the north then, very often, there will be the huge factor of housing costs round Oxford compared with most parts of the country.

Having family and friends around will be important for many young men in their early 20's like Rothwell and Ledson. Throw in playing football at a higher level and maybe doubling your money and gaining financial security. It makes a huge amount of sense!

We may want them to be completely committed to our beloved club for the long term but that's not going to be realistic too often. And there shouldn't, I don't think, be any sense of blame directed at player or club when it happens. Particularly when both parties handle it professionally and respectfully - see Kemar (but not Marvin!)

I agree Sir, I am being selfish.

I was lucky enough to meet and speak to Lego's dad. A football loving Liverpudlian, would got to as many games as possible, with Lego's family. According to Dickie's family, relocation back to Thames Valley was a factor in turning down Lincoln's contract offer. Appears to me our "link" with Reading FC, will benefit all parties concerned, ref Sam Smith etc...

Thanks that's very interesting to know. Sounds a lovely encounter. I am sure meeting his Dad - who if he's only half as enthusiastic as Lego would have been quite a character! - would give anyone an insight into Lego as a person and a "son" not just a "midfielder".

Shame Leeds didn't respect us enough to bring a full - or even half - strength team to our match the other night (despite our pathetic 2nd half performance).

Welcome Sam, let's overlook your plastic roots, I'm sure you won't feel too homesick.

Isn’t Smith from Manchester? [emoji14]

Carruthers was excellent Vs West Brom if looking like he will pick up yellow cards. Samir I think does have something to prove after not being able to push his way into Sheffield Utd's first team except as a squad player not playing regularly.

hop(e) Sam Smith starts how he ferments to go on...and blends well with beeks to deliver a winning brew up front.....satisfying the U's thirst for goals
