I understand the clamour for three/five at the back, but do have some concerns
- it worked for a bit last season, but only while baldock and Taylor were in partnership. Once SB got injured we tried continuing with it, but it soon looked quite disjointed. My feeling was that the success was down to the pair of them striking up their own partnership rather than it being the system.
- we tried it earlier this season to little avail, and it was only when we went back to a four that we started improving.
- any change of system requires everyone learning not only a new role themselves, but also where others are going to be on the pitch at any one time. This is not something that has typically gone well in recent times, whether five at the back, or the 4231 he tries periodically, with players often looking uncertain. This is why I'm inclined to agree that the players prefer 433, because thay understand it.
Yes, it looks better on paper with our current squad, but I'm nervous that too much chopping and changing away from the tried and trusted at this stage risks more mistakes, chances wasted and goals given away cheaply
