Hell of a player though isn't he? I'm too young to have seen Maradonna and Pele etc but he's hands down the best player I've ever seen, even when he's barely running he still produces big moments.

Oh without doubt. That goal he set up for Alvarez in the semi final was something else. The control and then sudden acceleration was extraordinary. Only a select few could do what he does.

I just would like some balance in unhooking the player and the person. We do it with other players but seemingly Messi’s skill covers up his dubious extra-curricular activities.

It's funny how people who, I suspect, have more thought process in common can differ in detail.

I agree the world cup is generally corrupt and my recollection of 86 aligns with yours. But in my mind the biggest fixes were Italy vs South Korea and Uruguay being denied 2 nailed on penalties this time.

That Italy v South Korea game was so off the ball corrupt it was laughable.

@Swaby39 should watch that penalty by Mbappe. The keeper guessed the right way but it was such a good penalty, hit hard and fast and low and in the corner, that it still went in. It was exactly the same side as Murphy’s yesterday, but simply put it was a better penalty…

this has really triggered you hasn’t it!! It’s just an opinion… Don’t worry, it divides my group of mates all the time.

People will say a Panenka is a brilliant penalty when it goes in. What it actually is, is a chip shot straight down the keeper’s throat lacking any kind of power. Not only could you fail to score, but you risk giving the goalkeeper possession to counter attack. But if you win the mind game, it’s a ‘fantastic’ penalty. Same penalty, but only a good one if it goes in. If Murphy does that yesterday, it’s arguably a ‘worse’ shot than the one he hit but he scores and we say it’s great penalty that took bottle…

My opinion on this is often not popular but formed having watched thousands of games at all levels as a football fan and played to a decent level myself also, where I happened to take a few penalties against my will! And that’s how I know you don’t need to be a special technician to score - I was a tall wiry centre back. I’ve seen enough pens. Doesn’t mean I’m right. Let it go!

I think not, Argentina were the best team in it, when they were good, and the French shat themselves for 70 minutes. Deschamps dropped the trophy before they kicked off, imo.

Perhaps, given the global economic realities FIFA would have a far stronger motivation to fix it for Far East than a region whose economic power has (been) crashed since the glorious autochthanous victory in the first world cup. Or Africa, the one continent that's been pillaged more than S. America since then.

All in all, this cup seems pretty straight, comparatively.
