Away Match Day Thread 18/9/21 L1: Cheltenham Town v OUFC

He needs the ball to score goals!

He made a great run and Sykes chose not to play him through one on one.

He then had a free header backpost 3 yards out and we crossed it straight over his head for a throw.

Second half he had a free header on the 6 yard box and we crossed it over his head.

He gets himself into great positions and we don't find him, then we blame him for being goal shy!

Not to mention the countless high balls he has to deal with on his own vs 2 big centre backs.

Taylor is a great striker, he's not the problem.
Okay Mrs Taylor

He's certainly not the only problem. Taylor is a little out of sorts and has missed some decent chances. But the services hasn't been good enough and he'd need to be 6'8 to get on most of the crosses.

KR saying he's fully aware that Taylor goes through baron spells...so why not bring in another genuine striker for when Taylor isn't scoring, and to alternate with him in order to share the load??
Because he spunked a load of wages on an injury prone one instead!

Even when Agyei came on, he was through one on one if we picked him out, we lofted it past him into the keepers arms.

The style of play is too slow, too predictable, final ball is not good enough.

I can't remember our strikers getting a chance with his feet inside the box for a while.

So in that first half literally every other outfield player was playing good little passes into eachother, runs, good balls, but someone whenever it got to Taylor they were playing bad ones? That doesn’t seem likely.

He was sluggish, didn’t win any of his headers, didn’t make the right runs, mostly gave the ball away when he did drop deep, and was offside too often.

Yep, the wide players have been a bit poor. Expect Williams to start getting back in now, he looked good before injury. Also miss Shopido's goals. Just don't see many goals, other than Henry, when Taylor not scoring from this team.

No! I don’t think he deserves to be fired. I mean that there might be knee jerk comments suggesting he should get fired!

I guess that depends how ambitious Erik, Anindya, and Horst are….

If you want a stable Lge 1 manager KR is the man absolutely. Start badly every season, and playing catch up. Go on little winning runs, and get enough points to either gain a playoff spot, or upper - mid table. That’s KR’s limit!

Yes a new manager can bring in its own problems, but I’d have Michael Appleton back in a heartbeat if offered.
So how long do we give KR fail this season whether by play offs or not making it? Then it will be next season we will go up but League 1is a lot more tougher.

Largely in agreement.

I make it 11 seasons now for KR as a a manger. Baring a month out between MK Dons and Charlton, he’s never been out of work.

Five playoff campaigns in that time suggests he’s a good manager. One promotion in over a decade suggests he isn’t a great one.

We need a great manager to get us up to the next level and I just don’t think KR has that X-factor to do it. I like him as a person, love many aspects of his management but don’t think his sides are truly aggressive enough to bully their way to promotion. Max Power said that Oxford have ‘a soft underbelly’ and he’s not wrong.

The wasted starts are something true champions don’t do.

He needs to start scoring, and you can make excuses every time but it boils down to the same thing he isn’t scoring.

In the playoffs last two seasons. One of those seasons in third before season stoped due to Covid. I think some of his decisions at the moment should be questioned but he is no where near being fired. I know some think that we should be walking our way to the championship every season but there is a touch of delusion of grandeur in some of our fans views on how big a club they think we are. Getting to the L1 playoffs two seasons in a row, including the final in one and beating and pushing some Premier League teams in the cups on the way, is a pretty decent return for us.

I agree on the service to Taylor, so why not play Whyte on the right and give Holland a chance from the start? We also have Bodin and Williams both are capable.

So how much longer? Another 2/3/4 seasons for the same return. Teams like Cheltenham and Wimbledon we should be getting something from.

But then take away ambition and the want to progress and what’s it then all about, so we should have high standards and want to progress

I think for a club like us playoffs two seasons in a row is a sign of ambition, I'm really happy with that and surviving financially of course! Too many Oxford fans think we are a bigger club than we are.

Holland is painfully out of form at the moment. Sykes is looking good too. But I agree that Whyte cannot play on the left

I was at AFCW a couple of weeks ago and watched that on iplayer. Carbon copy. Ran the first half, should have been 2 or 3 up. Ran out of steam in the 2nd half. Taylor has got no service. Aygei isn't the answer - poor control, general lack of awareness and not good enough for L1. Winnall is past it, but will still do a job for us if he gets service. KR needs to think about dropping Whyte for Bodin. And I have no idea why Holland gets to come on and run around for ten minutes every game. Totally ineffective. Surely Cooper must be worth a look at? Pretty disappointing couple of weeks, but if KR can fix service to Taylor/Winnall, we'll still do well this season.
