Away Match Day Thread +++ Peterborough Utd v OUFC - match day thread +++

CB has had his head "turned" as they say in the business & he will be off in the summer to a Championship club - so he's not going to bust a gut to get us there is he? He has just stopped playing and with no medical reason for it is extremely sad. You can bet that Zaki Nusbeih is already using his bean counter to work out how much "unplanned" revenue would have come from the play-off matches that now look a tall order but, hey, he has already said on RO that (quote)..."promotion would not be a good thing". Says it all.

We miss Chris Cadden more than I thought we would, and I already thought him going was a kicker in principle alone. His pace and stamina, and those constant bursting runs down the wing, created overloads and pushed teams back. He also created a lot more chances than most people realised - I saw a stat around Christmas that said apart from Trent Alexander-Arnold he had made more big chances than any other full back in England.

Nothing we can do about it, obviously, but I don’t think it’s a coincidence that since he departed our form has been pretty terrible. Return to us, sweet prince...

2 big moments affected the match. Hollands miss and then the foul on Mousinho by Toney before Mousinho fouled him back and they scored from the freekick. Would have been 2-1 rather than 3-0. Our game was riddled with errors today both in defence and attack. I dont think we had a meaningful shot on goal before they went down to 10 men. Brannagans error for the 1st was insane. Gorrin messed about too many times. Dickie fucked up at least twice. Long messed up for their 4th. Eastwood passed straight to their centre forward. The list goes on. The only player to come out with any credit imo was browne who at least tried. Shambles

We were 3-0 down when Holland put that chance over the bar. Mackie was on the pitch at the time and he didn’t come on until two minutes after the third went in.

I think fatigue is kicking in for some of our key players. I doubt if Gorrin has experienced such a high pressure season in his career so far, nor Brannigan. They’re going to start making mistakes unfortunately. Let’s hope Kelly and Thorne can step up soon.

While we’re on the subject of key plays and the squad in general, let’s just get something clear before we start talk about ‘last minute panic buys’. We knew, pretty much since August, that we would require a right back when Cadden left at the start of 2020. We also must’ve known quite early on the Mackie was getting near the end of his usefulness and Taylor had some sort of fitness issues that restricted his game time. So, UNLESS, we needed to sell players before addressing those issues, I can’t see how they needed to be ‘last minute panic buys’..??
I would have thought that, given at least 5 months, the recruitment department must have identified several potential targets in both positions. If the likes of Peterborough could strengthen where necessary why couldn’t we?

Some sensible comments at last. The players gave it their all on Tuesday night and were expected to perform again today.
Peterborough have the leading goal scorer and he’s on top form. I can’t understand why he hasn’t been bought yet.
We really needed to sign players. I don’t think Robinson can be blamed for that if as it seems he didn’t get the support require.
It is going to be very difficult to carve points out of the next three games. It is very tough up there with so many teams in the mix. I just hope we can keep CB and RD, as they are two of the best players we currently have

Just back - haven't read the other posts on this thread yet.

When I saw the team, I was pretty encouraged. I think it was probably our strongest line up. Robinson wasn't on the touchline - I presume as a result of the yellow against Newcastle.

We always looked second best. In the first half we mostly got away with it apart from the goal we (Dickie?) gifted to them. We were playing an ugly mixture of hoofing up the pitch and over playing the ball in defence. In the latter case, players were just giving the ball back to the player who gave it to them as our much lauded midfield went almost completely AWOL. The ball (if we hadn't given it away) THEN got hoofed up the pitch much of the time. Neither Brannagan nor Henry looked anything like fit. The ref was as blatant a homer as I have seen for a long time. Two players were trying to get the ball in midfield, the Peterborough player leaned on our bloke who then moved away. Unsurprisingly the man in blue fell over. Obviously a free kick to the Posh! He was so biased I was surprised he wasn't wearing a top hat and Barry Fry t-shirt. But we got to half time one down.

Well the wheels fell off big time in the second half. An early goal stung us into a bit of life, but Peterborough always looked dangerous. Toney is an obnoxious diving player, but we have nothing remotely close to his quality up front. There were a couple of dives by Posh players that ought to have been carded - it surprised nobody that they weren't. Despite their sending off, it was us who looked like we had ten men; there was little pace, we couldn't go past a man, off the ball running was a rarity, passes were going astray, there was no inventiveness and the legs looked very heavy indeed. Now, of course we played on Tuesday - but the fact is, we are going to be doing that all month. If this is the result then you can wave goodbye to the play-offs - we looked so lethargic and made so many mistakes that it's going to be hard going to gather a huge points tally.

I'm sorry to say that the better team won, that no single Oxford player really distinguished themselves and unless something changes pretty soon it will be a derby against our friends from up the road next season rather than a day trip to Norwich. Haven't felt so flat for ages.

Ha I wrote about this at the start of January. Henry and Cadden assisted the most shits in the team. People saw an attacking full back in Cadden but he was one of the top crossers in the league, assisted the most shots from his position nd git 4 assists from the start of the season. He was integral to how we played - he is a big miss that we haven't adjusted too

For a sense of perspective;

Peterborough are on a great run and scoring for fun, but win our 3 games in hand (2 of them are Accrington and Wimbledon at home) and we go above them.

Sunderland have hit a bit of form, but I still think we'll beat them next week. That could leave us a point behind with a game in hand.

Ipswich are falling away, and there's no reason why we can't get a result against them.

So we lick our wounds and go again. This season is far from dead and talk of another mediocre season or of giving up is frankly insane.

On another perspective we are 17th in the form table....

I think this is the central point. We knew we needed a striker and a full back and I can’t believe we needed to sell to get them - they didn’t have to be million pound men, just good solid league one standard.

Games in hand do not mean points. They mean, simply that the other teams have played their games and either got, or not got, points.
Either way, by the end of this month we will know how we stand. Sadly, the confidence and optimism that I carried into January has faded away.

Why couldn’t Kelly or Thorne have stepped up today?

Love it! We couldnt beat an egg at the moment Scotchers but yet were going to go on a mad winning run against the leagues best.

Honest question. Do you smoke crack?

100% right. Bad day at the office yes, but some of the crying on here is an absolute embarrassment.

I'll be back in a day or two when this board has calmed down a little!!!
What!? We need one of your big rousing speeches to tell us all is well and getting beaten 4-0 will be of little consequence!
