General Jan transfer window

Sorry, but that's speculation. We've learnt as fans that following the Taylor handshake incident, that until the paperwork is signed, no deal is a done deal.

Equally you could say Taylor will appeal to many other clubs, AND he will look elsewhere, he's got history, anything could happen with Woodburn next year, we were no where near Cadden's valuation, Marcus Browne will go where the money is, as when he signed for Middlesboro, the same day almost he was going to sign for us. Liam Kelly again's controlled by his host club, he could go anywhere.

We're not the biggest of payers, and it seems the board, up to this point wont pay fees to bring our own players in.

The board have paid fees for players.

The board are focused on getting the best players possible whilst working within an operating budget. FFP makes that hard when we have very few revenue streams.

If we bring in a young PL striker on loan, and along with Browne, Kelly, Holland and Taylor, we get promoted off the back of their contributions will you still criticise the board?

This is all fine. Of course. But lets just say that. Lets not pretend that weve got cash down for players only for deal after deal to miraculously "fall through".

For a change, you are entirely missing the point.

We can't simply buy every player, some aren't for sale, some would cost too much, and some are players for now rather than the future. That's why the loan system works, and we've used it exceptionally well so far.

The most important thing is that we get the right players in on the right deals. But that doesn't mean that we're doing anything on the cheap.

This

Being saying it for years but it appears most are happy watching other teams players knowing full well they'll never stay.

The problem though is the crazy money the 2nd and 3rd fringe players are paid which prevents clubs lower down affording them, everything as been about chasing the money for clubs higher up and players and their Agents...That fella Manure were after (Haaland? ) his Agent went all out for getting him to Dortmund because his thought process (The Agents) was already thinking he can earn from another transfer whereas if he went to Manure it was less likely.

Reading this forum many of our fans are just thinking about the value of our players rather than building a squad to be together for years and having a good go with the odd tweak here and there.

Sky and the media hyped up the Transfer windows and fans everywhere fell into the trap..i'm still waiting for someone to explain why signing a Premiershi* youngster is better than playing Agyei !!!

I still maintain that constantly breaking up the squad was partly responsible for fighting relegation for 2 seasons

I’m not sure the Haaland transfer is down to a greedy agent in the way you describe it, if his agent was just about money he probably would have sent him to Man Utd where he would have earned a hell of a lot more. The guy has made a sensible step up to one of the smaller ‘big’ clubs who are known for developing talent (Leadowski, Aubemayang etc) and he is already doing well being slowly eased into an attacking young team (Sancho has assisted him a couple of times already) whereas at Man Utd he’d have been thrown in as a starter and expected to be a saviour at a struggling giant. He’s made the right choice there for his career.

In terms of loans, I would say that first of all we do sometimes get players in permanently who have been here on loan. Roofe, Rob Hall, George Thorne are all examples of that, and all probably wouldn’t have joined without coming here on loan first. Secondly, I think it can actually work in your favour - if we do go up, it’s all well and good saying ‘oh no, we have to rebuild the squad’ but imagine the quality of loan players we will be able to bring in at Championship level - the top teams want their best youngsters to be tested there not in L1, and we will already have a lot of cache due to the way we play and the cup runs we’ve had etc, plus the way we’ve developed their players already - so there’s a good chance the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City and West Ham would lend us some of their top youngsters, players who with all due respect will perform better in the Championship than the likes of Browne or Kelly seem likely to do at the moment, given their past record there.

Exactly - Håland himself said that he chose Dortmund ahead of Man Utd because of their playing style and record of bringing through young talent (source), so this has nothing to do with some big agent/money conspiracy. Clearly it has paid off as he's already scored 5 goals in his first 2 games for Dortmund, in only 57 minutes of pitch time at that (which equates to 7.9 goals per 90mins on average, which isn't bad)

If anything the Håland transfer shows that a reputation for developing talent and an attractive playing style can trump the dazzling lights of so-called big clubs when it comes to players' personal choices - something which is often overlooked with transfers. I think this is something where we excel over nearly every other club in League 1, for instance with the Woodburn loan (ignoring his bad luck with injury - it was still a massive coup to get him to come here in the first place IMO) and Robinson deserves a huge amount of credit for this

That is rubbish.
I would guess that we pau more fees than most of L1 clubs.
Brannagan, Dickie, Moore. Fosu. Hanson, Atkinson, Sykes all I believe cost fees.
We offered money for Cadden
I am.bot sure how throwing out ridiculous comments helps a debate?

Respectfully, that’s the point of this debate, isn’t it?

There is no concept of Oxford sitting on their hands and failing to offer e.g. Ben Woodburn good enough terms to sign with us; we must be realistic.

And regardless of whatever talent we can persuade to sign permanent deals, we’d be damned fools not to borrow five-seven extra players we wouldn’t otherwise have a sniff of signing, for a fragment of what they’d cost.

We may not all love or even like the modern transfer system, but I’m afraid it’s here to stay; and one would have to be very churlish to say that United and KR haven’t done fairly well with it of recent seasons.

It’s a balance I’d say e.g. we managed to get the likes of Roofe, Lundstrum Ledson, Rothwell etc, but understand that’s not going to be the case for some players.

Not saying the club didn’t put in a sizeable bid for Cadden as money seemed to be available, but now KR is saying that the replay/additional funds would HOPEFULLY mean we can do something in the transfer market as this might change a few things financially.

If that’s the case, why couldn’t he have used the money they had set aside for Cadden to bring in these players he now can HOPEFULLY bring in, with this additional windfall meaning they could have strengthened the squad even further?

And you know we pay more fees than others?
Yes we offered money for Cadden but nowhere near the asking price.

I believe they wanted more for him than a Div 3 club would pay. Most clubs in our league don’t pay transfer fees, and those that do eg Pompey get double our gates.

Personally, I’m pleased we didn’t drop a mill on Cadden. He is very unique in what he provided, but to think he is the only player available if that ilk is wrong.

Money *appears* to be available for the right players, but if you consider Brannagan etc cost a few hundred thousand then that money can be better distributed.

Add uncertainty as to which league we will be in...we effectively have to sign players that *could* have to be championship ready in 6months - it’s no surprise we are using the loan market. You can have championship players at a fraction of the cost.

I think we will bring in another 1/2 this week, would love to see permanents, especially at RB, however it’s not apocalyptic if we don’t. If we close the window as we already are, we’ve had a very good January on that front

But in fairness Columbus crew haven’t even agreed a price for Cadden apparently they’re trying to undermine byte asking price.

If we bring in

I am not criticising the board. I am saying I hope that if possible they do push the boat out this week for permanent players, so that we can keep the shape of the squad together as much as possible over the summer, rather than there being theusual exodus of loan players back to their parent clubs, and the rebuilding starts all over again.

Homesick, not settling, not enjoying etc
I know this has been done to death on this forum, but it always seemed a very odd move. KR said as much as well. Hinted it was pushed by the agent. Cadden looks to be a Championship level player, so why move to the MLS aged 22?
