1st Test England v Australia - Edgbaston

Have faith! Jason Roy to hit 180 and win us the game.

Or Lyon to take 6-40 and roll us over 150 all out.

One or the other.

Few things.

The pitch is slow it’s more batsman error than good balls getting people out.

I believe it’s from crickets governing body these days who decides on what pitches should be prepped. Since the introduction of the icc cricket league.

The lack of red ball cricket our team has played is the main contributor. Only Broad and Burns have played much this summer. The others have been involved in one day s**t or rested.

This.

I was there at Edgbaston yesterday and, whilst criticism can be laid at the feet of Root and some of the bowlers, it was a pitch that offers more to the batsman than the bowler. Each innings has seen an increasingly higher score which shows there are no demons in and it is benign.

England aren’t without hope. In the 25 odd minutes where they faced 7 overs, they batted well and sensibly. Even Roy flat batted anything straight and put away the occasional bad ball for singles. Lyon found a little bit of turn but no more than Root and Denly found.

The Aussies are favourites by some distance but if England can build a couple of partnerships and keep wickets in hand, they could bat out the day on that pitch. My worry is their mindset - if we lose two set batsman, then rest will collapse. I have little faith in Moeen and Bairstow hanging around to assist either.

All out for 200? A last wicket stand nail biter like Cardiff in 2009? A against-all-odds chase? Or a mundane draw? Day 5’s aren’t normally as interesting as this!

Interesting & nerve jangling day ahead....... its raining in the Midlands.

FFS Burns gone ...todays uphill for England struggle just got steeper

BIG innings n captains innings a MUST from Root

Phew! Root survives an on field lbw 'out' on review

now go on & build a partnership with Roy - who needs to chip in with a big score today too

For us to stand any chance Root and Roy have to make it to Lunch together. How long before Roy gets desperate and starts going for boundaries and forgets all about smart cricket and taking sensible shots?

Another Root lbw 'out' overturned on review ... that particular Umpire Wilson is having a nightmare first Ashes test... and hes down to Umpire the 2nd Ashes test at Lords too !

damn Convicts reverting to type ,' owzating 'everything ... even when blatantly obviously not a legit shout!

isnt there a rule to stop or nip in the bud the convicts constant cheating snidey gamesmanship, which theyve been using for as long as I can remember

Not at Lords, he'll be at the third test though...
I know I supported the umpires on that crazy first day, but those two today were pretty dismal I'd say.

More likely to feature in the next Test Match;
a) Joel Wilson..?
b) Jason Roy..?

?

Denly gone... wasted review ...oh FFS

Nasser Hussain on live commentary has just cursed Denly's decision there, remarking..."Oh, what a waste...England might need a review at 6pm tonight against Lyon!"

Yeah, Nass....and Bury fans should start buying copies of "A Guide to Championship Football 2020-21"

What did I say? Have the right mindset and you create an opportunity for yourself. And then Roy goes dancing down the pitch and Denly wastes a review. Really poor cricket.

Mental weakness from too many in this England team. Too impatient, too fidgety and in a headspace where blocking is boring. It’s not - it’s game saving. You’ll have to face 540 deliveries today and you won’t face many charging Nathan Lyon on a fifth day pitch.

Needs some changes for next test.

Leech and Burns need to open next test in my opinion and Roy at 4.

Ali and Jimmy out for Jofra and Leech.
