He’d be valued at over £1m still, having paid £4m 3 years ago

He still has 2 years left on his contract at Watford, and I would guess his wages are in the region of £1m a year. They might be prepared to cut their losses by letting him go for next to nothing now rather than supplementing his wages for another 2 years. (Although I think a further loan is more likely!) It would then depend on how much he would want to sign with us? Hopefully Brannagan will be a good influence to show that game time beats bank balance!

I’m not sure anyone likes game time enough to turn down £2m in guaranteed wages to sign for us on £4K a week

I agree! But he will already have a few quid in the bank and might just want to get his career back on track. But the difference in wages would be huge which is why I think it's more likely that he would be a loan deal with us chipping in with his wages. That way he gets game time and bank balance!!

It's not about competing with other clubs, it's about making our own business as good as possible. In January, Portsmouth beat us to the signing of James Vaughan. Sunderland broke the bank to bring in Will Grigg. But Vaughan barely played and didn't score, and Sinclair scored as many, and produced as many assists as Grigg in less game time.

We shouldn't pay over the odds, or create a pay structure that causes disharmony for the sake of fitting in with others.

It’s hard for us to compete with these big clubs
I am not sure that Luton last season has a budget anywhere near Sunderlands and Pompeys and they definitely couldn't have competed for the Wyce/ Griggs type of signing.
So it's all about getting the transfers right as well as developing your own players.
Although we couldn't pay £3m + for Grigg, it doesn't mean that we cant end up getting more productive players.

Bargain for Charlton

I guess that he will be hoping to play alongside Taylor or as there is a big gap to the Championship they may ease him in.
It will be interesting to see how he does moving up 3 Divisions
