As much as I appreciate John’s role at the football club and his new venture at the PFA, I do find it to be somewhat selfish that he is insisting on playing again, despite the fact he is clearly no longer able to perform to the standard that we expect of him. He’s recovering from a serious injury and at his age, that’s going to be tough to come back from. There is no guarantee that he is going to be fit by the time the season starts, so he he is going to take up a place in the squad. As was the case this season, he was an un-used sub in 99% of the matches he was on the bench for. We need players that are ready and able to do a job, when called upon!
He is OOC. It’s up to the club if they want him to play for Oxford or not. How on earth is he being selfish?

Exactly. He’ll be retained as a player/coach and not be registered. We’ll throw him into Papa John’s games to pass on his experience to McNally. He’s not taking up a squad place and even if he was, it’d be the clubs choice.

I would much rather we used those games as a chance to blood in our youngsters, like McNally and Nico Jones (assuming he’s not released?)
I would quite like him playing next to players like McNally and Jones to help coach them through the game. As good as Moore and Atkinson are, they're both still young and don't have the experience to pass on to our youngsters that Mous has.

Well I assume that given the fact he is club captain and a coach at the club, he would choose to play here if given the chance? It’s selfish because he took up a space in the squad last year, and never played. That place could have gone to a youth prospect, or another signing that is able to play. It will be the same case this season coming, and we cannot afford to carry any dead wood.

Do you really think that it is JM who has authority to do as he pleases in all those matters?

He had a contract. It has been honoured, there is nothing selfish in that.

If he is OOC, then we don’t extend his deal. Simple as that. The club could (and should) have cancelled his contract in January and made him a permanent member of the coaching team. He can’t play. He’s not fit. For the third time, we cannot afford to carry dead wood because of sentiment. We need a squad of fit, and capable players.

Sorry, not quite sure what you mean. Do you think we should give him another playing contract?

From the contracted players I think Cooper will go, and Osei-Yaw will be loaned out with a view to being taken on from January. I don't think Brannagan will be going anywhere, as he hasn't had a good enough season to be worth the risk of triggering his buy-out clause. Clare is a funny one, a very talented attacking midfielder but KR will maybe be looking elsewhere now with Sykes and McGuane signed up and Lee possibly coming. I think we'd be open to selling him if the right bid came along and we didn't end up losing money on him.

Of the others, Forde will be made an offer but may look elsewhere for first team opportunities (and fair enough). Hall will go, Mousinho will retire and stay at the club, possibly still on a registration if this bloody stupid cap doesn't come in. Ruffels will go elsewhere, too much time has elapsed without a signature, I wouldn't begrudge him the move to the championship despite the fact that he is nowhere near that level in my opinion.

The loans: Barker will go elsewhere, Grayson and Kelly we won't see for dust and Shodipo will go back as QPR will still see something in him. Lee I think we will end up signing, despite the fact that I haven't really been bowled over by him. If by some miracle we go up, then we won't take it further IMO.

Agree with much of this apart from Mousinho, i would keep if squad nbrs allow, Hanson i would defo try and offload.

As for Lee, 5 goals and 2 assists in 14 starts and 3 sub appearances is not bad, he hasnt completed 90 minutes yet for
us and i guess he is still a touch short fitness wise, also think there is potential for himself, Henry and Taylor to strike
up a really nice understanding and that could be a lot of fun to watch, would defo try and keep if possible.

“Could”

Really? On what grounds?

Keep digging.

Mate, it’s a Friday afternoon and I’m not going to get into some debate about the legalities of cancelling a players contract. My opinion is that John isn’t good enough anymore and he is too old and injury prone to justify a place in next years squad. Simple as that. If he’s OOC, then we let him go as a player and keep him on as a coach.

Linked with Jacob Bedeau of Scunthorpe. CB, and set to leave on a free.

We removed him from the registered players as early as we could (Jan) when it became clear he wouldn't play again this season. If we tried to cancel his contract we'd have had to pay every penny left on it in one lump sum. Why should we have done that, when we could keep a valuable member of the coaching team with us on the same contract terms for the rest of the season? And what is so bad about having him stick around and play in maybe one or two pizza trophy games to help with his insurance/PFA spot, if it means we get to keep this intelligent professional on our coaching books?

No one is suggesting we register him for the league squad, or that he should be backup to Moore/Atkinson. We're saying if giving him the odd unimportant game is the difference between keeping him as our coach and him going to someone else, it's worth doing. Mous I predict will do really well in management, and has the respect of the players in our club. It's not sentiment, it's good business to do what we can to help him so he sticks with us.

Still wondering how he is selfish. But hey, Friday afternoon must mean that calling a decent man’s character into question is just fine and dandy.

Exactly, just cancelling a contract isn't straightforward as Derby found with Richard Keogh:

No club will take Hanson, he is here until the end of his (for us) lucrative contract. Even if we loan him out it will be for a fraction of his wages, we have made a load of profitable and good signings so Pekalski and him in the bad ones isn’t that bad, our success ratio is pretty decent.

On Bedeau - a CB foursome of Moore, Atkinson, McNally and Bedeau is all a bit young and exciting. The only thing that makes me nervous; Villa dropped nearly £1m on him as a 16/17 year old, then two years later let him go for free just as he turned 19. I'm sure his regular playtime has helped him develop but surely Villa must've seen something lacking in his two years with them to let him go for nothing? I've not seen him play before so this is purely based on a bit of Google which of course is nowhere near the full picture!

I thought the same. Plus the article sounds like it’s written on behalf of the agent who is trying to ensure a move.

Like you though I haven’t seen him play, so only guessing. Plus I don’t think we need a fourth centre half unless one is leaving.
