Stewart Donald anyone.....

Probably felt they needed to do something after losing Maja to Bordeaux for about that much money.

With regards to that pre-season tour that announcement is so late its ridiculous, how many fans can afford to cough near £2000 in a couple of months?! That is dreadful planning.

Spending £4m (in league 1!!!!) on Will Grigg in January screamed "sh*t or bust, we need to get it done this season." If they lose out in the playoffs I think it's a monumental failure.
He didn't cost £4m. That's the top figure based on a host of variables i.e. promotion to the PL.

Still, it would have been a significant up-front payment.

I'd like them to go up. I think SD is a decent guy and should SAFC get promoted, he has more chance of making the money to save us (potentially) when the next crisis comes knocking upon our door. They also skew the league, which I don't think benefits OUFC.

Pretty much covered by the funds received from Bordeaux, non?

Majority shareholder SD is a self-made millionaire dealing with risk management (insurance). Minority shareholder Satori is a multi-millionaire who has married into the family of a billionaire. I think they will all sleep well at night even if SAFC fail in the playoffs!
I thought it was SD family who built up the family fortune, his father was really the Oxford fan and the real money in the family.

Hardly far off, it was an upfront fee of £3m rising to £4m. A record signing for League 1 level. Regardless of any player sales that's a huge player and a huge sum. They could have reinvested the Maja money but like I said, spending it all on Will Grigg screams panic to me.

They tried Marquis and a couple of others first I believe.

And have taken about 100 fans! Could go either way this one, very tense

Tinpot. Village teams always revert to the norm.

Like us. We probably belong somewhere in league 1 with occasional promotions to championship and down to league 2.

About the same as Reading have taken away at times this season isn't it?

So Wrexham's defeat means that one of Eastleigh, Fylde, Solihull & Salford is going to be playing in the football league next season for the first time.

None of them averaged more than 2,500 crowds this season......

I used to think it was funny to have these tinpot clubs in the football league - and then we spent four years in the conference, and now I don't wish that on (almost) any established football league club. So good luck next year to Wrexham, Chesterfield, Hartlepool, Stockport & Torquay (and probably Notts County)!

On the Sunderland front - remember that Maja was only one of their player sales this past season.

Over the summer, they also sold Borini for 5.5m, Lens for 6m, McNair for 5m, Khazhri for 9m, Asoro for 2m and Steele for 1.5m.

Sure some of those figures are after add-ons, but it's still a staggering amount of income for a League One club. Coupled with the insane second year parachute payments.

Yes they've had to spend some money paying off the previous owner, and yes they've still been stuck with some truly mediocre players on big wages - but they're still working with revenue streams that are an order of magnitude higher than most of their League One competition.

If they don't go up, I refuse to believe it's anything other than a massive failure.

Agreed. Out of those left I would prefer Eastleigh now. Don't want Man Utd B, Blackpool lite or Solihull. On that basis I've cursed Eastleigh now.

Fylde currently beating Solihull in the playoff semi-finals.

Don't know much about them apart from that they're managed by former long-throw specialist Dave Challinor, whose reputation in non league management has been exceptional.
