Ex-Player Josh Ruffels

Huddersfield’s starting left back isn’t even on anywhere near 10k a week, and he was signed from L1 the same as Ruffels. The big money doesn’t go to full backs, so while plenty of Championship clubs have numerous players on 15/20/25k a week, it ain’t them. Especially when they’ve come from the lower leagues.

But he has most likely doubled his previous wages and bagged a six-figure signing on fee, so good on him. Even two years on 5k a week would net him £300,000 cash after tax, plus whatever is left from his lump sum for signing on. Many tens of thousands, I’m sure. In total it’s probably worth 350-400k of actual cash in his pocket for two years. If he does enough to earn a third year then he will smash through the half a million mark.

This is why I find it so bizarre when people hold players moving clubs against them. Once you break it down into real, everyday terms and realise the money that is actually on the table, and how long the average person would have to work to pocket those same net sums, it’s another world. If you earn £40,000 a year (a very good wage that an awful lot of people are not on or even near) then based on those numbers Ruffels would earn in two years what you would earn in 12/13.

“I think everyone needs a bit of competition. I feel like I didn’t have that real competition at Oxford, so to push someone else - and hopefully I can do that with [Toffolo] - I’m excited.”

Bit of a mistranslation there. What he really said was:

"I had to get out of there ASAP before I was displaced by Elechi for good. That guy is going to be an elite LB and I needed to move on while the step up was available."

You seem to know your stuff @RyanioBirdio..

I agree with what you are saying re where the big money goes, but I thought he'd be on more than £5k / week at Huddersfield. There seem to have been a couple of other clubs interested as well..

Regardless, financially no doubt a great move for him. Good luck to him..

In a year or two maybe
I don’t know, from what I’ve seen he’s already better than JR In some areas. But then I’ve never really rated him (JR) that highly. I don’t think he was good enough defensively, exposed against good wingers, often out of position and too many times didn’t prevent the cross. Better going forward but then was he as good at doing that as other players we’ve had of late on the opposite side. There are players that go and you’re absolutely gutted about but JR is 100% replaceable and IMO we should improve upon IF we get the right player in the door. The reaction to him leaving on here (or lack of it) kinda proves my point. But I wish him all the very best and i hope he improves at his new club and goes on to better things.
He was right about the lack of competition though and that’s something KR should not allow this coming season.

From what o saw of him he seems to be lacking in confidence, doesn’t seem to want to take people on and is looking to get rid of the ball from his feet as quick as he can. Another season or two and give them the confidence he may jus t be the left back we’ve been looking for, but at the moment he hasn’t got JR’s Mous.

Best of luck Josh..stay fit. Thanks for the part you played in getting to where we currently are.
