General Joey Barton

The Gas should sack the t**t with immediate effect and the FA/EFL should be banned sun die from all football within the U.K.
The Gas new he had form and still employed him, he achieved good results on the pitch but he has a lot of baggage off it, wouldn’t want him here.

Bad news for Barton.
Joey Barton guilty over 'grossly offensive' X posts https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cwykwlkewr7o

Forgive me if I'm being ignorant on the subject matter (and I'm in no way trying to defend Barton, who's an evil human being) but I'm not sure I see a crime here.

None of his posts seem to have been threatening or inciting violence, were they? They are gross and insulting - and I'd be fully supportive of a libel suit where the wronged parties could get a big cash payment from him - but it does make me a little uneasy when speech like this is criminalized.

But some lefties got upset, where’s your compassion!

The court is 'making a serious point in a provocative way'.

He deserves to be sent down just for claiming "banter" as a defence.

Barton is a first class a*****e and is managing to make a career out of being one. He is taking advantage of how fucked this country is right now but sooner or later he will be an absolute nobody and rightly so.
A vile individual.

Agreed, the guy is a melt but I have a hard time getting behind a conviction for offending a few celebs on Twitter.

All parties should have paid attention in nursery.

"Sticks and stones may break my bones
But names shall never hurt me."

How calling people names, outside of blatant racism etc, has become a crime shows how far the seesaw can tip the wrong way.

It also proves how "social" media can become the most incidious thing by letting folk into your life that you would cross the road to avoid.

Use the block facility or don`t follow knobs.... easy really.

Nonce

Wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org › wiki › Nonce

Nonce, a slang term chiefly used in Britain for alleged or convicted sex offenders, especially ones involving children.

He tries to come over as intelligent and erudite, then opens his mouth. Accusing people of pedophilia will result in getting what he deserves.
I know the word nonce, just not sure how one can be a "bike nonce". Is he saying Jeremy Vine sexually abused underage bicycles?

Agreed. It’s quite worrying that this is seen as a crime. What an unpleasant individual he is though. Is there a problem with UK libel laws that stops this kind of thing being dealt with as a civil matter?

The libel aspect will likely come later.
With a criminal conviction in the mix the chances of winning a libel case are much higher, losing a libel case can be very, very expensive.

First of all Barton is a proper grade-A bell-end of the highest order. However, I agree that criminal proceedings for this is over the top. What he said about Vine, Ward and Aluko was completely unacceptable. I know he was already been fined for comments made about Jeremy Vine - has he paid that yet? If not, then that would be a police matter.

Also, if he carries on with his campaign of hate afterwards, then I guess that becomes contempt of court. I'm no legal expert, but there must come a point where if you carry on with malicious communications regardless, then it eventually becomes a criminal matter.

I agree with all of this, with the one caveat that the Fred and Rose West tweet was hilarious.
