Am I alone in thinking that Long is a quality right back and a very good defender?
I am very happy to have him in the side ( agree that we need a better left back option to Seddon)
Yes I think that Long is a decent defender but Forde is not good enough as cover. Long has a history of injuries, and not having proper full back cover has cost us over the past few seasons.

If we are going to sign a right back, we have to look at players better than what we currently have to give us the extra push we need.

Findlay is a good example of the sort of signings we should make if we are serious about promotion. We have two very good centre backs in Brown and Moore, but Findlay looks likely to be a step above. That is no discredit to Brown, Moore and also Long.

...and yes, Seddon is not good enough currently.

Knowing KR by now it’s set up to fail then:

1st Brannagan did ok but was wasted in that position
2nd Kane playmaker who’s form fell off a cliff since that sending off at Lincoln away & made very costly errors (several times) due to not bringing in another DCM for Gorrin’s long term injury which cost us a playoff place
3rd McGuane throw of the dice again but we all know it will cost us when it really matters

That's the spirit!!

Not alone at all. Long is our best defender and a very decent right back. But we need a proper RB/RWB to back him up and enable us to use Long on the right of a 3, which would give us a bit of flexibility in setting up.

Just need build round that partnership now
New Goalkeeper coming is a big ✅
Just need 2 decent Fullbacks to replace Long & Seddon if we want to improve
Then bring in an upgrade on Gorrin in DCM then that sorts out a lot of our problems in defence

McGuane or Smyth can sit in there if necessary, when Gorrin is in need of a rest. We also need a pacey winger that can cross, and a striker to help Taylor.

KR was pitching McGuane as a DCM, so I’m not sure that we will sign another for that position

If this is the case that it’s a massive mistake and a total failure to learn from previous mistakes.

DMC is a specialist position. You need to have played there to understand the role both in and out of possession.

You want someone who doesn’t take risks on the ball, and out of possession someone who knows when to cover for advancing defenders, and when to take one for the team and break up play in any way possible.

You want someone who can tackle effectively and has the positional discipline to hold their position when others bomb on.

Brannagan wasn’t this, Kane wasn’t this, and McGuane isn’t this.

Bit whiny tbh

It’s got a bit hysterical at times but when the season finishes on 30th April and we don’t make our first proper signing until 10 days before the next season starts dont you think the ‘panic’ you allude to is warranted ? By definition, panic then results in pent up anger and concern. For every Barcelona you mention there’s an Ipswich Town, it hasn’t gone to plan and just because we’ve made our first signing now it shouldn’t paper over the fact that this window remains one that we have operated poorly in.
Not a fair comparison with Ipswich who are paying 3 or 4 times as much as we are as well as a couple of million pound offers in for players . For league one top end players no wonder its going well for them !

The Defensive Midfielder role is not as one dimensional as some suggest.

Gorrin does a lot of the ugly stuff, covering the full backs, making last-gasp tackles, taking bookings for the team etc. But his distribution isn't the greatest and there have been times when he's slowed down play by taking extra touches or by looking to play safe 5 yard passes to others.

A couple of seasons ago we put Brannagan back into that role, and we lost some of that defensive cover but gained from getting on the front foot earlier, driving forward or hitting balls out to the wings to create counter attacks. We conceded a few more, but scored a lot more and got ourselves into the playoffs as a result.

Last year was similar with Kane playing a quarterback type role rather than doing the defensive cover and disruptive tackling work of Gorrin. In many games it worked. We tore teams apart at times and not just the poor sides. We were rightly in and around the playoffs for most of the season because of our attacking style.

There's no reason why McGuane or Smyth can't play in this role, but with a little more balance towards the defensive, disruptive side, but with the ability to also drive forward or spread the play quickly. There will always be games where Gorrin is the first name on the team sheet or where he's brilliant to close out a game. But that doesn't mean that we shouldn't also look to play to our strengths and take the game to others.

Will they play together much? How's Moore's injury? Do we need another experienced centre back in now?

Looking forward to the new keeper but if its the lad from Ireland will he be first team ready?

A full stop or comma here or there wouldn’t go amiss, nearly passed out reading that, especially with this heat!

The Findlay signing, as much as some on here may not like me using the term, is a massive 'signal of intent'.
The sort of signing that should make others at this level sit up and take notice of us.

Also, whilst I know that footballers may be more driven by money and other factors, I can't help but feel that for a potential signing with a couple of comparable offers on the table (including one from us) seeing the likes of Findlay sign must surely be a plus in our column.

Likewise, if you're a Premiership manager and you are looking to loan out a young left-back and we are in contention - you may be encouraged to see that a full Scottish international with an excellent pedigree in the SPL will be playing alongside and helping to mentor said player.

Superb bit of business that goes beyond the signing of Findlay himself.

Disagree, it's a specialist position that not everyone can fulfil. Need a specialist replacement for Gorrin if he's going to struggle for the first few months of the season.

Agree with this; Gorrin has always been underrated by many because a lot of the work he does goes unnoticed. Anyone have an update on his fitness?

People have mentioned getting a new Left Back. I have a suspicious feeling that Ciaron Brown will be played in that position when we play a 4. Not that it would bother me. I think he is more than capable of doing a job there.

Not just Moore’s injury

Long is injured Gorrin and Baldock haven’t kicked a ball yet.

We go on about our defence but god forbid Taylor gets a knock ,we have absolutely nothing to replace a 20 goal a year striker.
This has been obvious in our last two games ,we have no goal threat. Taylor did get on but looked rusty

Anybody ITK tell us if we are seriously looking at a top quality striker?
