Current Player #30 Owen Dale

I’ve heard very mixed things about Dale from Portsmouth fans, and haven’t been especially impressed so far. He doesn’t seem very quick, or tricky, or to have a great cross. Hopefully we’ll see more from him once he’s settled but if all of our 6-7 wingers were fit I can’t see him being at the front of the queue…

Let's see. Very early days.

Deserved man of the match today. Got the ball stuck under his feet a lot in the first 30 minutes but then he was excellent for the remaining 60 minutes.

Pleasing to see that he was well up for it from the start as well. We need a few more with that sort of attitude.

It’s always interesting looking at past opinions.

Dale had a great game is getting better each week. I thought he was brilliant last week too against Pompey.

I stand by what I said at the time, but he’s certainly turned it around and is doing very well now - he’s settled excellently, as I alluded to.

Now let’s look back at some of your comments on Karl shall we 😂

Great bit of wing play for the goal, loads of energy and a bit of trickery, looks the pick of the January signings.

Agree with the energy and positivity he brings and the mindset of wanting to take on his full-back.
Don’t underestimate the fact that he is two-footed. He should be a centre forward’s dream with his crossing ability.

It wasn’t a dig at you, it just shows how quickly things can change in football.

I think Dale will be a very key player for us next season.

Agree completely, he’s an excellent utility player, with his best position where he played yesterday, but you know he’s going to do a job wherever he’s asked to play. He’s also the sort of character who can get the players around him as well as the crowd going. He’s quickly becoming a firm favourite.

Cross for the winner yesterday was utterly exquisite. Can only imagine how awesome it must have felt for Greg Leigh to see that one arcing onto his head six yards out!

Dale’s a really fun player - his play’s not always the most refined but his attitude is top notch, he gives defenders a lot to worry about and he makes things happen. Excellent signing.

The juxtaposition of Owen Dale and Tyler Burey is, for me, a perfect example of how recruitment doesn't have to be guesswork and gambles.

You sign one winger with a record of being regularly available, playing plenty of matches, contributing goals and assists (over a number of seasons, with multiple clubs, at and around this level) - and lo and behold, he turns out to be reliable to that effect.

You sign another on loan, whose track record is, well, quite the opposite - and he turns out to be anything but.

Footballers have a way of telling you who they are and what they're about and, crucially, what you can expect of them. Believe them when they tell you!

And that is why you sign one for a fee and on a 2.5 year contract, and the other on a loan with a relatively low wage contribution.

Burey was virtually a free hit, a try before you buy. It looks like it hasn't worked out so we'll cut our losses and look again in the summer.

Our recruitment team is still fairly new, and Ed Waldron has only been in his role for 12 months. Its realistic to recognise that not every signing works out, especially loan deals. But if we're going to gamble, doing it through low cost loans is better than through long term contracts.

Which category did Jodi Jones fall into before Notts County signed him?
