Transfer News Summer 2023 Post-Transfer Window

I'm not ITK at all but I suspect he doesn't fit with how Manning wants to play, similar to when England were crying out for Grealish but Southgate wouldn't play him. I think he takes too many risks and does his own thing too much.

Like I say, purely guess work on my part and it's more than likely there were other reasons he left but I wouldn't put him in the same bracket as Gorrin, who I didn't really think was good enough before and that was prior to having another serious injury and playing in a position that suited him and doesn't exist in our current team. Djavan on the other hand was absolute quality, streets ahead of Long despite getting a reputation of not being able to defend after being hung out to dry against Wycombe. I don't want to keep mentioning the name but once Robinson called him out in public it emboldened a few on here to do the same and he struggled to shake that reputation, despite the fact we were clearly a better team with him in it. This was borne out by the statistics when he played v when he didn't but also easy enough to spot if you had eyes in your head and watched the games.
Yeah I did rate him.

I’m just not sure he’s the future.

Anderson didn't leave because a few people on a football forum didn't fancy him. He left because he wasn't offered a contract.

I agree with @MJB that we should really be looking at better either way, but think that we've looked best with a back 4 this season. Greg Leigh was less effective today as a wing back than he was as a left back (although I think he'd be even better as the left sided forward. I also think that Stevens wasn't great defending and didn't get forward enough. He's also looked better as either a right back or ahead of Long on the right.

Not saying that we can't get better, we certainly can. But I'm not sure we're getting the best out of the full backs/wing backs that we've got.

Oh yeah there were worse players. But he offered very little. Attacking-wise they’re chalk and cheese
His little touch around the corner literally made our only goal from open play today

Not saying we can't improve, but we didn't not win today because of him

Dion Charles cost Bolton £320k.
Colby Bishop cost Pompey £500k.
Alfie May cost Charlton £250k.
Jack Marriott cost Fleetwood £250k.

These are not insurmountable fees for a wealthy and ambitious L1 club.

All were attainable at the time. All with a proven record at this level.
All were instead signed by other clubs - and have subsequently continued to produce at this level.

It's not rocket science.

Grow a pair. Make this calibre of signing happen and we'll get promotion.
Mad how that 400k just can't be spent isn't it, when you look at that quality....

Dion Charles for 300k. Bloody. Hell.

I wonder where things would currently stand in terms of formations/selections if Stevens and Leigh were exactly the players they are, but naturally played on the opposite flank?

Would we be playing a four with Leigh and brown as FB....
...or a four with long as RB and Leigh RM
...or would it be a five with long and brown still as the wide CBs and Leigh and stevens as WB...
...and in each case, which would be our stronger/weaker side?

The striker chat is always interesting. We obviously tried for several in the summer…Marriott, Longman, Burey seemingly all linked to some degree.

Looking at the striker market for January, many in league one will be thinking with a strong window they can push promotion, therefore I imagine we will be in the mix with other teams.

But as always, which names could be available? Proven, and available, and falling into our budget?

Three names that I’d be having a close look at would be:

Dan Kemp (MK on loan at Scum) 8 in 14
Jake Young (Bradford on loan at Scum) 10 in 14
Macauley Langstaff (Notts County) 11 in 16

Langstaff would be the one for me but would cost a reasonable fee, I’d imagine.

If you’re looking in league 1 then just go and get Clarke-Harris from Posh. 6 months left on his contract, a deal must be possible, even when dealing with Daragh McAnthony.

Well actually that £400k could realistically be worth £420k if it's been locked up for a year earning 5% interest.

Only problem is that £20k is a drop in the ocean for living in Oxfordshire. I'm not sure if Marriott could afford to move here, especially after getting used to house prices in Fleetwood.

The trouble is we’re looking at players that have already been ‘found’.

Maybe our best bet is for the recruitment team to unearth a diamond from the lower leagues?

I’d love any new CF we sign to bring a bit of physicality to our side, somebody who can hold the ball up when played in to their chest.

If we’re going to spend big, I’d rather we went for someone like Al-Hamadi at Wimbledon who’s value is more likely to go up than down.

Hhmm. Maybe.

Not sure I love the slide towards bringing in players like Gorrin and Anderson if they were previously deemed surplus to requirements.

Maybe until January if we really need cover urgently, but we do need to start moving on for bigger and better.
I agree with lots of what’s been said already - he is a risk and I fully accept he and Manning are not compatible.

But just thought I’d pick up on this bit - I forget the stats now but the few good times we had as a team last season had Anderson in somewhere. I’d argue he is already proven to be bigger and better than Long and the only area Stevens would be better than him is the final ball, where he is brilliant at times, but it’s pretty untapped in most games as Long can’t see him before the opportunity has passed.

Anderson was a maverick but I never watched him and felt he’d gone completely rogue. I think it looked worse as Robinson didn’t even attempt to mitigate the risk of him inevitably losing the ball sometimes. Manning would - if he wanted to - and he’d have a better structure around him making it safer to take chances. I think he’d improve this team no-end with his ability to beat a man (he pissed on people at times) and would offer some rare pace to our back line. Defensively he was more than competent and dealt with Martinelli just fine. I’d have him back in a flash.

I think he’d been found out, teams knew that he’d dribble into the middle and they could take the ball off him around the half way line. It would be fun if he came back though

There is a sweet spot here though, when a player has perhaps recently started to score goals at this level or the one below but is yet to be picked up by a bigger club. You won't get them for free but you're not breaking the bank at that point. They've proven that they've got ability but are not yet on the radar of Championship clubs with deep pockets. They'll likely increase in value too.

Colby Bishop from Accy to Pompey is a perfect example.

Isaac Olaofe at Stockport could be another. Exactly the right profile, a proper centre forward.
Big, strong, natural finisher who can also press.

Played a lot of football for a 23 year old (fit, healthy) but with his best years ahead of him.

He's the sort of centre forward that I could see Bolton or Peterborough signing in January for £500k and then selling on to West Brom or Stoke for 7 figures in a year or two.

He may be one that (much like Thomas-Asante) bypasses League One altogether - but I do believe there are affordable centre forwards with decent pedigree that can also fit the model and grow with us.

We've shown with the signing of Rodrigues that we're (now) very capable of making this calibre of signing.

Issac Olaofe’s full name: Isaac Tanitoluwaloba Aduraoluwatimileyin Olaofe

Please… we must think about Nic Harris before making these sort of recommendations

I'm sure he could get a decent discount on a hotel room.....
