Transfer News Summer 2023 Transfer Window Thread

Look at the replies. Just some kid on his summer holidays refreshing the latest tweets containing '#ecfc' and tweeting anything that comes up. They've got that from an OUFC fan tweeting something like 'hope we get Nombe' - tweet itself means nothing.

That said, reckon he'd be a great addition. Although I suspect any bid put in will be 'leaked' and a bidding war would ensue. Wouldn't be cheap.

Yeah Exeter are in a decent position financially but with the heart of their team now taken out, Nombe will soon transition in to a ‘want-away’ player unless they reinvest quickly. Keeping him away from championship buyers is a challenge but also the reason we should be in there asking the question.

The best part of £1m is what it will likely cost to get someone of this quality if we want it. I think Joseph would cost a similar amount and it’s a position that carries a premium. If you can, you should. Ipswich spent similar on Broadhead and that’s the signing that got them over the line.

Nombe's out of contract next season and not looking to sign a new deal. Sure, Exeter's squad is pretty depleted, but they'll back their system. He'll have a price, and it would take a club record fee for us, but it would still be closer to half the £1.3m that was plucked out of thin air.

Like Joseph, he's a tireless worker, but he has more quality and would comfortably get 15+ goals here if he stays fit for the majority of the season. I'm not sure how many other available players would essentially guarantee that, so if we're as ambitious as we're being led to believe, I'd be surprised if we hadn't made an approach. I've no doubt we're looking to unearth some potential gems, but given the backing he's reportedly got, Manning will be signing players who have proven they can perform at this level (see Thorniley and McEachran).

Their manager has said they are bringing in 6 or 7. They will likely promote from within as they have done successfully for years.

I've mentioned it before but a player I'd like here is Stansfield 20 years old he's not going to get in the Fulham team this season

Kip’s got his mate who says “our business is done” or “don’t expect anything” the day before every window closes
And has largely been proven right! I still vividly remember the day all and sundry were piping up about us "going for it" "making a statement" whilst those of us in the know confirmed it was just Djavan Anderson.

Occasionally we have had a very last minute panic foray when something has fallen on our lap which has left me with egg on my face, but the impression many have if us in a mad rush to do deals and whacking the moolah down on deadline day, largely isn't the case.

A stopped clock and all that. We weren’t doing anything in Jan either, but then Konate and Smith turned up. I look forward to the tradition again in a few weeks.

Don’t get me wrong, they’re fantastic on this front. But I don’t think they’ll have faced this kind of challenge before. They’ve lost 2 championship-level players already and face losing their goal scorer. They also lost Jevani Brown and Jack Sparkes who were a big part of their side.

It’s a lot to replace in one summer but they do have the resource now. It’ll need to go a long way but perhaps they were ready for this and know who their targets are. They can’t just spend it all on prospects when they need 50 points, still. Tricky few weeks ahead for them.

What's your prediction for the next 5 weeks until the season starts, and by the end of the transfer window? I'll go with;

2 strikers (1 perm, 1 loan)
1 left back/lwb
1 holding/defensive mid
1 winger (maybe PL loan)
1 wildcard type signing (loan)

Maybe a development player or two to mirror previous transfer model.

What do you think?
