National News The Brexit Thread 🇬🇧🇪🇺

Just imagine if the Tories hadn't sold off all the council housing. And I don't mean it would have made it a lot tougher for them to have won elections.

All fair proportion of Cornwall's (and the rest of the UK'score that matter) housing problem has its roots in this particular election bribe.

Just imagine if no government since built any new ones................ :)

Retaining his company in Wales......... "What I’m doing will enable me to import and export into and out of the EU within the company itself".

Had a problem, found a solution. :)
And hollowed out his UK based company to get around the rules, thus taking revenue and jobs abroad :)

Sunlit Uplands. I know...maybe you could drop him a line and tell him where they are as he seems to be struggling to find them in the UK post Brexit:unsure:

Rinse and repeat - it took 40 years to enmesh us and untangling that will take time, especially after many years wasted trying to reverse an electoral majority.

His simple solution would be not sending mixed pallets...

Right, so all these companies moving in part or in whole abroad (and in the process DAMAGING THE UK ECONOMY) shouldn't be so hasty. Hang on for circa 40 years and things will be dandyagain. That's really is all you've got isn't it 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Businesses change and adapt - taken a walk down your local high street lately?
Lots of empty shops because the likes of you and I are shopping online ....... that is probably more DAMAGING TO THE UK ECONOMY.......... but hey, doesn`t suit the agenda. 🤷‍♀️

So glad we are now free of all the bureaucracy and red tape that was hurting us in the EU

"We had to cancel our appearance at Resistance Festival in Spain because an airline lost our equipment"............ yep blame Brexit for that.

Covid- "A lot of people ended up having to go and get other jobs because the music industry shut down." ...... yep blame Brexit for that.

I wonder if these people were complaining when local pubs, often a starting point for many bands, were closing purely through economics - or rubbing their hands together at the thought of more income for their festivals?

Can Brexit be blamed for anything in your eyes?

In isolation, anyone can find something, but life doesn`t work like that. :)

Has it made life different for some people? Undoubtedly, most were aware it would before casting their vote.

Have we suffered the forecasted collapse of the economy, empty shelves etc etc? Nope, other things have intervened.

The pace Whitehall works at means that TIGRR only came up with its recommendations on regulatory freedom in June 2021. Any benefits of that will take time to filter through and may not directly affect you or me, but there we are.

Does that mean any problems inside the EU should not be taken in isolation either?

There were 40 years of "problems" to sort out that led to a cumulative decision to leave.

The original Common Market was a fundamentally great idea - the decades of "one size fit all" policy & political movement is what led to the decision.

There is a possibility that older folk who remember what we joined were the ones that made the difference to the result.

So in essence, you shouldn’t view Brexit problems in isolation because life’s complicated. But if you want to view EU problems in isolation then fill your boots?

If you view the Common Market and the regulatory alignment needed to achieve that as great idea, why are you so keen to leave?

The Common Market and regulatory alignment making sure "stuff" is safe etc is fine.

However, the EEC morphed into something far beyond that, especially after Lisbon when the EU gained a legal personality.

That is when we should have held a referendum because of the fundamental change in the organisation's status, but parliament under Blair/Brown thought they knew best.

Between 2000 - 2007 countries in Europe (France & Holland) had already been asked, and rejected, the idea of a closer political union because it would have weakened the "power" of the domestic electorate.

Of course, the EU just waited them out, moved the goalposts and the Lisbon Treaty arrived which was delayed by the Irish electorate giving the "wrong" answer in 2008 so they got another go to give the right answer in 2009.

Couldn’t have put it better myself

😂 may as well just have quoted random words than selectively chosen the only bits that weren’t brexit related

It was used as filler in the article you linked to and had little/nothing to do with the subject.... :)
Hats off to you for possibly being the only person in the known universe who can read that article as saying Brexit has absolutely no effect whatsoever on an industry you clearly know very little about.

Maybe we should ask some "ITK" posters on here who are in fact industry experts for their experience and evidence as opposed to you ill-informed armchair-based nonsense?

Maybe @RyanioBirdio would care to comment...or maybe not as he would probably be saying what is blindingly obvious to all but the most visually impaired Brexit zealots.....

I’ve explained pretty meticulously in the past how it’s made things worse across multiple sectors, so I doubt anything I say now will make any difference.

I’ll give you one fun fact that I haven’t seen anybody mention in the media though: due to post-Brexit rules regarding how long EU tour buses can stay in the UK for, in some cases the drivers are having to catch a ferry to Ireland or France just so they can turn around and come straight back in again. Often this requires factoring in an entire day off due to the time it takes, which costs thousands of pounds because as well as there not being any show to monetise that night, all of the bands and crew members require hotels. That goes on your ticket price. There aren’t enough UK-based buses and drivers to fill demand, which in the case of the drivers themselves (as well as many riggers and stage hands) is partly because a lot of them moved to Germany so as not to lock themselves out of the majority of their work once Brexit kicked in.

Numerous merchandise companies have also slashed their UK operations and moved the bulk of their fulfilment to places like Leipzig, because the EU makes up far more of their business than the UK and getting items on/off this island is now far more difficult and costly. UK merch printing companies have also seen their business more than halve in some cases, as touring artists are using EU companies to make huge swathes of their garments as they can pass freely through European borders without needing a carnet, as they were made in the single market. Previously the UK companies would print the lot - now they print the stuff for the UK shows only and nothing else. If they print any of them here at all. Because they’re printing less units, the bulk discount has shrunk which means the price per unit is up, which means the consumer pays more. Again.

I’m going on tour myself next year across Europe as well as the US, Japan and Australia, which now requires me applying and paying for working visas to enter places that previously I could’ve strolled into by nonchalantly flashing my passport. I can’t put my rates up because otherwise an EU citizen will get the job over me, so I have to swallow all the costs myself. I’ve had to take a real terms pay cut while spending more time working.

And that’s just the stuff I can be arsed to type.

Er, BLUE passport if you please. Selectively avoid mentioning the benefit of Brexit why don't you.
