As much as I agree with what you’re saying, you don’t score 23 goals in League One for Morecambe, by accident. He also scored 13 the season before, but granted, that was a lower level.

I’m intrigued to know who we’re looking at. After the signings we have made, it’s safe to assume they’re quality. Exciting times.
I agree. He hit a sweet spot last season. And it goes without saying (but I'll say it anyway!) that many factors will contribute to that, not just the fact he was the last person to touch the ball before it crossed the goal line. If we are (and it is a big if) interested in him, can we recreate the same conditions (on and off the field)/playing style/set-up in which he thrived last season?

Thierry Small to Port Vale
Callum Roberts to Aberdeen

The mass hysteria about no signing, weeks before the season I will never understand. This said, the jury is still out on the transfer business this summer. On paper, three great signings the last week, but we are still short in key areas (full backs, holding midfielder (Gorrin for me is a squad player), and striker). Fingers crossed it all comes together, we certainly seem to be going for quality, but the season starts Saturday and with key areas missing, could equally go belly up and be as a team left wanting. It’s a high risk strategy - but probably the most interesting one since Jim Smith.

It’s great to get Murphy over the line to join Findlay, McGinty, Wildschut and the others who have returned or signed new deals.

However, I do think it’s still premature to be getting giddy at the business we have done and should refrain from considering ourselves genuine promotion contenders until the following has taken place;

1) two new full backs who are signed with a view to starting in our best Xl
2) A genuine holding midfielder who can be disciplined in the position (think Camara at Plymouth who bossed both games against us). It remains to be seen whether that is McGuane but I’d argue there has been nothing to suggest that is really his game, so far.
3) competition for Taylor and Baldock is signed. An alternative to the ‘fox in the box’ and someone with a bit of presence who will impose themselves on the opposition.

So far, the recruitment has been solid and you can’t argue with the additions - if they stay fit they’ll become assets for the football club. But, I would reserve judgment on the window until it closes. Robinson hasn’t yet addressed the balance of the squad and until that happens, I can’t help but think we’ll fall short of promotion, again. Here’s hoping he’s learnt the lessons of the last 2/3 seasons.

Camara is available. Think that’s someone that we’ve been in contact with? As you said, he bossed us at their place. He’d be an excellent signing!

Very fair

If we were to sign Camara, I’d argue that would be the most influential signing of the lot so far. An excellent player who is different to what we currently have at the football club.

Is one good season in 10 years ‘proven’ though? I think I’d rather a player that hits the 15 mark regularly than a player that’s hit 20+ once and not much else personally.
Valid question. Suppose my answer would be that if he had 3 or more seasons scoring 20+ goals at this level at his age, he'd be in the Championship at least. Taylor has been excellent for us, no debate, and in a 2 he walks in my best XI. I just question whether in our 433 whether we would be a better collective unit if we had somebody up there who could properly contest *and win* a loose ball - not necessarily Stockton, he just appears to be flavour of the week.

Camara is excellent, but I wouldn't call him a holding midfielder - more a box-to-box type.

He did Baldocks movement left Taykor with so much more space to exploit.

Baldock only started 4 games last season. It's a small sample size.

Charlton - finished 13
Crewe - Bottom
Cambridge - finished 14
Burton - finished 16

Might be as much to do with the quality of opposition faced? Again, too small a sample size to judge.

That may be true, but I think we saw enough in those games to see the impact of two up top.

If anything the strength (or weakness) of opposition in the above may lend itself to the argument for a 'horses for courses' approach - two up top against the lesser sides (possibly coinciding with no 'true' CDM) and then a more conventional 4-3-3 with one up top and Gorrin as CDM against the better sides.

Think we would struggle with the price they want for him but he is someone I would absolutely want if we could get him but I imagine he will be priced at upwards of £500k, even in the last year of his deal. Him & Brannagan though 🤤

I agree,

It must be said that Baldock also had a big impact coming off the bench (3 games).

Having a squad that is flexible and adaptable (especially with 5 subs allowed) will be really important
