You didn’t suggest it was the cut off but you suggest it’s a major failure if this isn’t done. Ask any manager in the world, they’d love to have their squad in place with weeks ahead of them to knit it all together. That isn’t reality. And you can’t compare us to other clubs because we all have different financial constraints, a particular way of playing and an existing squad to build around - I.e. different gaps to fill. When have I ever claimed that the start of preseason is the absolute cut-off date for signings? Of course we'll be bringing players in, as no club ever gets all their business done before the first day of pre-season. But there's a big difference between not having all signings completed in time for pre-season vs none.
And judging by the interview Karl gave today, coupled with the reaction of a couple of ITKers, it hints that no secret players are ready to be announced for the Spain trip. Happy to be proven wrong though!
Yes we could have signed Tucker, or Leigh, or Pack… but… what if we didn’t want to because they aren’t right for us? Haven’t we made enough expensive mistakes on players to understand why the club may use all the time available to them?
We got out the blocks pretty quickly last year despite a number of late signings. In an ideal world we make it a little easier on ourselves this year but this is life in the lower leagues, it doesn’t always go your way and we cannot continue to ignore despite the backing of new owners we will still operate within our means and that means 5 or 6 clubs minimum are offering more than we are.
