General Politics and OUFC - Cause for concerns?

I've been thinking about this and I still don't understand how Bakrie and Thohir being part of a consortium that owns OUFC is an attempt to quash an independence movement back in Indonesia? Bakrie and Thohir are rarely in the UK so its not as if they're menacingly walking past Mr Wenda's office down the Cowley Road.

If someone could explain to me I'd be grateful.

Not sure they are as one American seems to own 82% of the share capital

The fans trust does have veto over anything that would change the club’s identity though e.g name, shirt colours etc.
Eric Morecambe passed away years ago .....

Seriously though, their fans trust, I think, have a say ...maybe some ability to veto ( on some minor-ish things?)... believe majority shareholder is a Yank
The FSA have been pushing for supporter representation for some time. The OUSP is a step in that direction and whilst it cannot force the club to abide by any vote, it can make suggestions and highlight the views and opinions of supporters. In time, and government action, it may come to pass that representation will be at boardroom level. (don't hold your breath on that though!)

although in terms of voting power it is not even as good as minimal ....minority shareholders consist of a number of OUFC supporters ( stating the obvious) , there is / was minority shareholder representation at board level ( elected at shareholder AGMs in the past) at OUFC - sadly, since Tiger and co have taken over ( and yes there has been 2 years of pandemic) there hasn't been a shareholders AGM held

- legally the club/ board are not required to hold one every year, however its been some time now since minority shareholders have had the chance to voice opinions, or ask questions and seek clarification from board members

with that in mind Im beginning to cynically wonder if OUSP is literally a box ticking exercise by OUFC under the current regime , as there hasn't been a Shareholders AGM held since Tiger took over from ol slippery

Myles was/ could be a tad annoying when posting regularly on YF & picking rows with almost everyone (IMO)

that said, he was very good (in the main) in finding and sharing 'information' .... like on that recent tweet

He tried telling us, that we were going to be asset striped, and being take over by Pairoj the crook. He also said we being sold down the river to Tiger and his friends.

Fortunately he was Myles off.

granted he wasnt always right ... even though he believed , often rabidly , that he was

Hopefully we'll have a statement from Bakrie or the club soon.
They can almost certainly just wait for this story to pass. Only a few diligent oxford fans know about this, most that know won't care a huge amount. If i was them I'd wait it out and carry on as normal rather than get involved in all the fuss.

His doomsday scenarios didn’t always ring true, but he was always pretty hot on being able to dig up information about who was involved with what, or which pieces were shuffling around the board, when everybody else rejected such notions. It was better to have access to the information he was often able to provide than not.

Pairoj being involved with the club in any manner has always been less than ideal. He is an undesirable character to say the least. The man has never bought a hot dog in his life.

You'll have to excuse my ignorance on this subject, but I am ashamed to say that I was completely unaware of Wenda or even the situation in West Papua.

I would argue that purchasing Oxford would/has had the opposite of the desired effect i.e. I am now aware of an geopolitcial issue which I previously wasn't .

Got that for you. :)

Bit quiet on that election front whilst we wonder about far off climes and "democracy". ;)

Begs the question of what the Indonesians see in the club. I guess sportswashing doesn't come cheap. Would much prefer we had a fan led ownership model.
Man Utd are £498 million in dept, yet the Glazers are still turning a substantial annual profit from owning the club, particularly in their own bonuses. Buying a club in dept is by no means bad for business.

EDIT : Not that I'm suggesting the investors have sinister financial motives with our club, nor that they plan to milk us dry. This was just a reply to the reference to the £17 million putting off investors.

Would someone mind clarifying the concept of "Sportwashing" in this case?

My understanding of Greenwashing and Queerwashing is when a business out-of-the-blue declares a new initiative in support for environmental/LGBTQ+ rights seemingly just to tick a box. This shows that they "care", and can be used as a means of advertising when jumping on the next big cause.

In what way does buying a football club fit this bracket?

well done on being the one person to have heard of him so far.
Actually I have heard of him, many years ago. Living in the Netherlands the papers and tv often cover events in Indonesië. The situation in West Timor was featured a long time ago by the media, including the guy in Oxford.
Other than that, quite a few years ago, his name has never been mentioned that I can find since then. At the time no person's or companies were mention who could have been benefiting from the UN ruling.
But West Timor does not get much attention nowadays.
As far as I can see it is not possible to directly link our owners to the status of West Timor. I'm not pointing any fingers at them. But (very) high finance does sometimes have it's darker side.
