International News Covid-19 .....

Up to the 27th August..............

119125 people in Leicestershire have tested positive - up from 118370 (increase 755).
50016 (increase of 253) were within the City.
69109 (increase of 502) cases were reported in the County.

130+ or so positive inpatients.
17 on mechanical ventilation.

Certainly hasn`t gone away and is creating a hefty workload.
On a side note am I correct that re-infections aren't being captured in the daily numbers? Thought I read that from an article by Robert Peston. Seems a bit like fudging the numbers if that's correct?

Speaking for local services only, the numbers we send in are positive lab PCR results linked to a patient ID
Now "we" aren`t testing everyone as many are done through T&T and the other pillars of testing as well as squillions of LF tests folk are doing.

However, it says on the gov.uk data page.............

"Number of people with at least one positive COVID-19 test result, either lab-reported or rapid lateral flow test (England only), by specimen date.
Positive rapid lateral flow test results can be confirmed with PCR tests taken within 72 hours. If the PCR test results are negative, these are not reported as cases."

So if someone files a positive LF test but then tests negative on PCR that doesn`t count.

Maybe Peston is getting muddled?

Does anyone know why when the covid figures are revealed that when it comes to deaths it’s just that the rolling figure has now gone and I’m wondering how close to 140k deaths it is now

207 dead today. I’m sure there’s plenty of people who’ll be arguing for another lockdown.
I think we should just keep, vaccinating. We can’t force people to have the jab and there are many young people who are refusing to have it

How do we keep vaccinating if we can't force people to have the jab and people are refusing to have it?

Nicola Sturgeon is mandating vaccine passports for anything "fun" it seems.

I`ve already got my vaccine status on my NHS app (not the Covid NHS App).

If someone doesn’t want a jab it is there business and their personal choice of course. But they certainly can’t expect the majority of the vaccinated population to go into another lockdown because of it.

I and my whole extended family chose to get jabbed so that we could start to get our lives back.

I am afraid that I have little sympathy for those that find they can’t do “stuff” because they haven't jabbed or become ill with Covid.

Local schools went back sooner than many in the UK.

Some are already reintroducing bubbles due to positive tests............

This could also touch on the Brexit thread, but I thought I would share some of the impacts here in Asia.

Hong Kong - A lot of foreigners/expats have left, not really due to the issues with China, but due to Covid, restrictions on travel (have to quarantine for 21 days in appointed hotel = expensive), inability to travel out of a small country. Shipping is more expensive and ships/containers in short supply. Also, some companies, looking at their footprint in Hong Kong.
Singapore - Very few Visa's being issued, also some say different rules for locals vs foreigners, inability to travel, still has some restrictions. Also, some high profile incidents involving Brits and other nationalities
Philippines - Still under strict conditions, again lots of foreigners have returned to their home countries. Inability to travel, even inside the country.
Japan - Hasnt issued Work Visa's for over a year. SoE still in place.
Malaysia - We are following the UK, but still record numbers, but things are slowly opening up. Again, very few work visa's being issued, and little foreign talent coming in. A large number of foreigners, including British have left and returned home.

These are just some, and the impression, certainly for the UK, is that a lot of Brits, living or working abroad have returned home and these countries now have to rely on local talent.

I don’t disagree, however, some of the reports I’ve read suggests that vaccinated people are almost as likely to catch the virus and pass it on as unvaccinated.

I hope all of those coming home have their HGV licenses ready!

Could very well be true.

I think we have to accept that by trying to live our normal lives we may still catch Covid and pass it on. The saving grace being that the vaccine will diminish its effects and not become life threatening.

Either way, we have to learn to live with it.
